You can search our catalog using different mineral attributes. For example, you can search by color such as green, yellow or purple, or by chemical elements such as uranium, calcium or iron, or by mineral groups such as phosphate, silicate or carbonate. You can also filter by crystal habit like crystal, geode or crystal on matrix, by specimen size such as thumbnail, small, medium or cabinet, and by features such as radioactive or fluorescent minerals.

Calcite

Calcite is one of the most abundant and versatile minerals on Earth — a trigonal calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that crystallizes in an astonishing variety of forms, from sharp scalenohedrons ("dogtooth spar") and flat rhombohedra ("nailhead spar") to massive, fibrous, and stalactitic habits. Its perfect three-directional cleavage, hardness of only 3 on the Mohs scale, and frequent fluorescence and phosphorescence under UV light make it endlessly fascinating to collectors and scientists alike.

Classic type localities include the Elmwood Mine in Tennessee, famed for giant lustrous scalenohedrons, and Joplin, Missouri, source of some of the largest calcite crystals ever recovered. Mexico's Guanajuato and Santa Eulalia district, Namibia's Tsumeb, Congo's Katanga, and Romania's Herja, celebrated for bicolored calcite balls, all yield exceptional specimens, while Dalnegorsk in Russia has produced optical-quality crystals up to 30 cm. The historic Helgustaðir Mine in Iceland gave the world Iceland spar, the flawless, doubly-refractive variety once used in bombsights, polarizing prisms, and possibly Viking navigation.

Collectors prize calcite for its extraordinary morphological diversity, association with fluorite, sphalerite, stibnite, and amethyst, and dazzling optical properties like birefringence. From honey-colored crystals of Malmberget, Sweden, to English classics from Egremont and Alston Moor, every locality produces its own signature habit and color, making calcite a cornerstone species for any serious mineral cabinet.
