This is an exceptional combination specimen of Calcite with pink Stilbite, entirely natural and of outstanding aesthetic value. The piece is dominated by a large calcite crystal reaching almost 9 cm, whose well-developed faces and sharp edges allow the crystallography of the specimen to be fully appreciated. The crystal displays a naturally grown, richly saturated tone that gives the whole piece depth and character.

Contrasting beautifully with the calcite, clusters of soft pink Stilbite crystals accent the specimen, creating a refined color contrast between the two species. Stilbite typically forms tabular, wedge-shaped crystals that gather into sheaf-like or bow-tie aggregates, and the pink coloration seen here is one of the most sought-after shades for this species from this locality.

The specimen comes from the Pune District of Maharashtra, part of the vast Deccan Traps volcanic province of western India. This immense sequence of basalt lava flows, formed by repeated eruptions in the geological past, is riddled with gas cavities (amygdales) in which zeolite minerals such as stilbite, along with calcite, apophyllite and heulandite, crystallized from mineral-rich fluids circulating through the cooling rock. The region remains one of the world's most prolific sources of large, well-formed zeolite specimens, and pieces combining sizeable calcite crystals with vividly colored stilbite are particularly prized by collectors.

This specimen combines two classic minerals of the Deccan Trap cavities: Calcite, a carbonate mineral, and Stilbite, a hydrated calcium-sodium aluminosilicate belonging to the zeolite group. The large calcite crystal shows the characteristic rhombohedral to scalenohedral faces typical of well-formed specimens of this very common but visually variable carbonate. Stilbite, by contrast, typically forms thin, wedge-shaped tabular crystals that commonly twin on the {001} plane, producing the sheaf-like or bow-tie shaped aggregates for which the species is well known; the individual crystals on this piece reflect this typical habit.

The pink coloration of the stilbite is generally attributed to trace amounts of iron incorporated into or coating the crystal structure, acting as a color-causing agent that tints otherwise colorless or white stilbite in soft salmon-pink hues; this is one of the most prized color varieties of the species from this locality. The calcite itself is essentially colorless to lightly toned, its appearance dominated by the transparency and reflectivity of its well-formed crystal faces.

Both minerals formed as secondary, low-temperature hydrothermal deposits within amygdaloidal (gas-cavity) basalt of the Deccan Traps, precipitating from silica- and calcium-rich fluids that percolated through the cooling volcanic rock over geological time.

The Deccan Traps, the vast volcanic province in western India from which this specimen comes, formed from enormous outpourings of basaltic lava roughly 66 million years ago, one of the largest volcanic events in Earth's history. The gas cavities left behind in the cooling lava became natural chambers where zeolite minerals like stilbite, along with calcite and apophyllite, later crystallized from circulating hydrothermal fluids.

The Pune region of Maharashtra is internationally recognized among mineral collectors as one of the finest sources of stilbite in the world, producing individual crystals and aggregates in a wider range of colors, sizes and forms than almost any other stilbite locality. Pink and salmon-colored stilbite, like that seen on this specimen, is one of the most attractive and desirable color varieties found in this volcanic province.
