This remarkable Calcite specimen tells the story of a mineral-forming environment that was active across several distinct growth episodes. At its core lie two twinned Calcite crystals, intergrown along a shared crystallographic contact, forming the structural backbone of the piece. Over this foundation grew a dense population of more than 300 secondary scalenohedral crystals, each terminating in a sharp point and displaying well-formed crystal faces that catch the light from multiple angles.

A third growth phase followed, depositing a thin, translucent calcite film over the scalenohedral crystals and softening their outlines with a subtle glassy sheen. The combination of sharp, pointed terminations beneath a smooth translucent coating gives the specimen a layered, almost sculptural texture that rewards close inspection, with individual crystal faces and growth steps clearly visible under good lighting.

The specimen comes from the San Giovanni Mine in Bindua, a hamlet of Iglesias in southwestern Sardinia, one of the historic lead-zinc-baryte mines of the Iglesiente mining district. Mining at San Giovanni began in the second half of the nineteenth century and continued, under several operators, until the mine finally closed in 1998, making it the last active mine in the district to cease operations. Its underground workings, including the celebrated Santa Barbara Cave, are today partly preserved as a mining heritage site, and specimens of this quality and complexity from the locality are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the market.

With its combination of twinning, multi-generational crystal growth, and well-defined scalenohedral forms, this piece is well suited to both systematic mineral collections and display in refined interior settings.

Calcite is a carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO3, one of the most widespread and morphologically diverse minerals on Earth, capable of forming in hundreds of different crystal habits. In this specimen, the scalenohedral habit dominates: a form bounded by inequilateral triangular faces that come together in sharply pointed terminations, clearly visible across the hundreds of secondary crystals covering the piece.

A particularly interesting feature of this specimen is the presence of twinning in the two foundational Calcite crystals, where two individuals grew together sharing a common crystallographic plane rather than as two entirely separate crystals. This is followed by two further growth generations: first a dense coating of pointed scalenohedra, then a final translucent calcite film that softens the surface texture.

The warm, translucent tone of the calcite in this specimen is typical of material from sulfide-bearing hydrothermal deposits such as those of the Iglesiente district, where trace inclusions and minor impurities incorporated during crystal growth can subtly tint otherwise colorless calcite. Formation likely took place through the circulation of carbonate-rich hydrothermal fluids within cavities of the Cambrian carbonate host rocks, with each new pulse of fluid responsible for one of the visible growth generations.

The San Giovanni Mine, near the hamlet of Bindua in the municipality of Iglesias, was one of the key lead-zinc-baryte mines of Sardinia's Iglesiente mining district, an area whose mineral wealth was already exploited in Roman times. Industrial-scale mining began in 1867 under the Gonnesa Mining Company Limited, and the site passed through several operators before its underground workings became publicly managed in 1982.

Rising operating costs and declining ore grades eventually led to its closure in 1998, making San Giovanni the last mine in the Iglesiente district to shut down. Part of the complex, including the spectacular Santa Barbara Cave with its calcite, aragonite and baryte-lined walls, has since been preserved as a mining heritage and tourist site.

Twinned crystal growth, such as seen in this specimen's paired Calcite crystals, occurs when two crystals grow together sharing a common crystallographic orientation — a genuinely uncommon phenomenon that adds both scientific and aesthetic interest to a specimen.
