Quartz (SiO₂) forms the base of the piece as glassy, well-formed crystals; its colorless to milky-white appearance comes from the pure silica framework of the mineral, with any milky zones usually caused by microscopic fluid or gas inclusions rather than a true chromophore element.
The golden Pyrite (FeS₂) crystals owe their bright metallic luster not to a pigment but to the electronic structure created by iron-sulfur bonding within the crystal lattice, which strongly reflects visible light and produces the characteristic brassy-gold sheen. Pyrite from Traversella is historically noted for well-developed and sometimes highly complex crystal forms, ranging from simple cubes to octahedra and the rare, multi-faced "diploid" habit documented at this locality since the 19th century.
Calcite (CaCO₃) appears here as small, translucent to white rhombohedral crystals; its typically pale color reflects the chemical purity of calcium carbonate, which lacks the trace transition-metal ions that would otherwise tint the crystal more strongly.
The Traversella Mine, a skarn deposit formed at the contact between a dioritic intrusion and older metamorphic host rocks, was worked from the late Middle Ages until its closure in 1971 and is today considered a depleted, historic locality, which adds to the rarity and collectible value of well-formed specimens like this one.
