This natural specimen showcases a fascinating three-mineral association from the historic Traversella Mine, one of the most celebrated skarn and hydrothermal localities of the Italian Alps. Lustrous, golden Pyrite crystals have grown directly over a base of glassy, well-formed Quartz, while small rhombohedral Calcite crystals scattered across the surface add a further layer of textural contrast to the piece.

The pyrite displays a bright, brassy-golden metallic sheen typical of well-crystallized specimens from this locality, standing out sharply against the transparent to milky-white quartz beneath it. The calcite forms delicate, semi-translucent crystals that soften the overall composition, providing a gentle counterpoint to the strong metallic gold of the pyrite.

The Traversella Mine, worked from the late Middle Ages until its official closure in 1971, is regarded by geologists as the only fully exploited skarn-type mineral deposit in the entire Alpine chain. Formed at the contact between an intrusive dioritic body and older metamorphic host rocks, the deposit produced an extraordinary range of mineral species that are today held in major museum and private collections around the world. Since underground mining ceased more than five decades ago, well-formed combination specimens of this kind have become progressively harder to find, adding to the appeal of this piece for collectors of classic Alpine and Italian localities.

This specimen brings together three mineral species with very different chemistries, all crystallized within the skarn and later hydrothermal veins of the Traversella deposit. Quartz (SiO₂) forms the base of the piece as glassy, well-formed crystals; its colorless to milky-white appearance comes from the pure silica framework of the mineral, with any milky zones usually caused by microscopic fluid or gas inclusions rather than a true chromophore element.

The golden Pyrite (FeS₂) crystals owe their bright metallic luster not to a pigment but to the electronic structure created by iron-sulfur bonding within the crystal lattice, which strongly reflects visible light and produces the characteristic brassy-gold sheen. Pyrite from Traversella is historically noted for well-developed and sometimes highly complex crystal forms, ranging from simple cubes to octahedra and the rare, multi-faced "diploid" habit documented at this locality since the 19th century.

Calcite (CaCO₃) appears here as small, translucent to white rhombohedral crystals; its typically pale color reflects the chemical purity of calcium carbonate, which lacks the trace transition-metal ions that would otherwise tint the crystal more strongly.

The Traversella Mine, a skarn deposit formed at the contact between a dioritic intrusion and older metamorphic host rocks, was worked from the late Middle Ages until its closure in 1971 and is today considered a depleted, historic locality, which adds to the rarity and collectible value of well-formed specimens like this one.

The Traversella Mine, tucked into the Chiusella Valley north of Turin, was worked for iron ore from the late Middle Ages all the way through to 1971, when it was officially closed due to rising costs and competition from foreign iron deposits. Geologists consider it the only fully exploited skarn-type mineral deposit found anywhere in the Alps, formed where a dioritic intrusion met ancient carbonate and metamorphic rocks.

Beyond magnetite, its historic main product, the mine has yielded well over a hundred recognized mineral species, and its pyrite crystals are particularly famous among mineralogists for displaying rare, complex combined forms, including cubes, octahedra, and the unusual 24-faced "diploid" habit first studied by Italian mineralogists in the 19th century. Today the former mine buildings house a dedicated mineralogical museum celebrating the remarkable specimens once extracted from its tunnels.
