This is a superb combination specimen of Pyrite, Calcite and Sphalerite from the legendary Huanzala Mine in the Peruvian Andes, one of the most productive and celebrated pyrite localities on Earth. The piece displays a well-developed group of brass-yellow Pyrite crystals showing sharp, well-defined faces with the fine parallel striations that are a hallmark of Huanzala pyrite, a result of oscillatory growth between cube and pyritohedron forms during crystallization. The crystal faces are bright and highly reflective, allowing the geometry of the individual pyrite crystals to be fully appreciated from multiple angles.

Adding to the visual appeal is the harmonious association of translucent-to-white Calcite and darker Sphalerite crystals, which soften the hard metallic brilliance of the Pyrite and introduce a genuine color and texture contrast across the specimen. This kind of multi-mineral assemblage is highly sought after, since single-species Pyrite pieces are common from this locality while well-balanced combination specimens with visible Calcite and Sphalerite are comparatively harder to find in this quality.

The Huanzala Mine is a lead-zinc operation situated at high altitude in the Central Andes of Ancash Region, Peru, and has been in continuous operation since the 1960s, run by Compañía Minera Santa Luisa, a subsidiary of the Japanese group Mitsui Mining & Smelting. Despite decades of industrial extraction, the mine remains active and continues to be regarded as one of the most important sources of aesthetic sulfide specimens in the world, alongside its historic output of fine fluorite. This specimen, measuring 90 x 52 x 61 mm and weighing 315 g, is a fully natural, untreated piece straight from this iconic Andean deposit.

This specimen brings together three classic sulfide-and-carbonate species from a single Andean hydrothermal system. The dominant Pyrite (FeS₂) owes its intense brass-yellow, metallic color to the strong iron-sulfur bonding within its cubic lattice, a bonding arrangement that produces the free-electron reflectivity typical of metallic-luster sulfides — the same property that historically earned pyrite the nickname "fool's gold." The crystals typically grow as cubes, octahedra, or combinations of the two (cubo-octahedral forms), and the fine parallel striations often visible on their faces result from oscillatory growth between the cube and pyritohedron forms during crystallization.

The associated Sphalerite (ZnS) appears in darker, almost black tones, a coloration commonly caused by the substitution of iron for zinc within its crystal structure — a compositional variation sometimes referred to informally as ferroan sphalerite or marmatite, which is typical of many Peruvian polymetallic deposits including Huanzala. The Calcite (CaCO₃), by contrast, is colorless to white, since pure calcium carbonate contains no structural chromophore elements; its transparency and glassy luster arise directly from this chemical purity, in a trigonal crystal lattice that commonly produces scalenohedral crystal forms.

Geologically, this mineral association reflects the complex hydrothermal skarn-type mineralization typical of the Huanzala deposit, formed where Cretaceous limestone was intruded by quartz porphyry, generating the conditions for base-metal sulfides and carbonates to crystallize together in open pockets.
