This is a striking large-format specimen of natural white aragonite from the legendary Cozzo Disi sulfur mine in Sicily, one of the most celebrated mineral localities on the island. The matrix is dominated by bold, elongated crystals of aragonite arranged in tight, radiating groups that display a distinctive pseudo-hexagonal outline — a hallmark feature of this species caused by cyclic twinning of three individual orthorhombic crystals joined at roughly 120-degree angles, so that the resulting form mimics true hexagonal symmetry even though aragonite itself belongs to the orthorhombic system.

Scattered across the aragonite crystals are bright, gemmy sulfur crystals of an intense lemon-yellow hue, together with small crystallizations of calcite, creating a vivid and elegant color contrast between the pale, almost ivory-white aragonite and the saturated yellow of the sulfur. The individual aragonite prisms show well-developed crystal faces and a vitreous surface luster, while the sulfur crystals retain sharp terminations and a bright, resinous sheen typical of the finest Sicilian material.

What makes this specimen especially remarkable is its considerable size — measuring 226 x 194 x 61 mm and weighing nearly 1.9 kg — placing it firmly among the large cabinet-sized pieces prized by serious collectors and museums. The Cozzo Disi mine, active from 1839 until its closure in the late 1980s, is now abandoned and partially flooded, meaning no new specimens of this quality are being extracted; this scarcity, combined with the mine's status as a protected mining heritage site, makes well-formed combination pieces like this one increasingly difficult to find on today's market.

The aragonite forming the bulk of this specimen is a calcium carbonate mineral, chemically identical to calcite but crystallizing instead in the orthorhombic system. Its color here is a pale, almost ivory white, a result of the mineral's inherent lack of strong chromophore elements in its structure — pure calcium carbonate is colorless, and the milky-white tone typically seen in Sicilian aragonite comes from light scattering within fine growth zoning and microscopic fluid inclusions rather than from trace element coloration. A particularly notable feature of this piece is the pseudo-hexagonal habit of the aragonite crystals, produced by cyclic (trilling) twinning of three individual crystals joined at approximately 120 degrees, a classic and well-documented phenomenon for this species that creates the illusion of true hexagonal symmetry.

The accompanying sulfur crystals owe their vivid lemon-yellow color to the intrinsic electronic structure of native sulfur itself, which absorbs strongly in the blue-violet region of the visible spectrum, producing the characteristic bright yellow we see — this is an inherent property of the S8 ring molecule rather than the result of any impurity. The Cozzo Disi mine, located between Casteltermini and Campofranco, was one of the most important sulfur mines in the entire Agrigento district and operated for roughly 150 years before closing in the late 1980s. Today the underground levels are flooded due to the lack of water pumping, and the surface complex has been partially converted into a mining heritage museum, making the site historically significant but no longer a source of new specimens.
