This is a superb, fully natural specimen of Galena with associated Calcite from the renowned Sweetwater Mine, part of the Viburnum Trend in Reynolds County, Missouri — one of the richest lead-zinc mining districts in the world and a locality that remains active today. The piece is dominated by sharply formed cubic Galena crystals, with the largest reaching approximately 2.3cm across, displaying flat, mirror-bright faces typical of the well-crystallized galena for which this district is famous.

The Viburnum Trend is geologically distinct from Missouri's older Lead Belt: here, ore-forming fluids allowed galena to develop as larger, more euhedral crystals rather than the fine-grained, disseminated material typical of older deposits nearby. The result, visible in this specimen, is a set of crisp cubes with high metallic luster standing in vivid contrast against the paler, more delicate Calcite crystals that accompany them.

The overall composition is scenic and well balanced: the reflective, almost mirror-like surfaces of the Galena play against the softer texture and habit of the Calcite, producing a specimen with genuine aesthetic depth as well as strong mineralogical interest. Unlike Missouri's older, historic Lead Belt near Park Hills — where mining ended decades ago — the Sweetwater Mine remains an active operation, and specimens like this one continue to be recovered from working areas of the mine.

Geologists have long noted that the Viburnum Trend produces unusually large, sharply faced galena crystals compared to other Mississippi Valley-type deposits, a result of differences in how the ore-bearing fluids interacted with the surrounding dolostone. This is part of why Sweetwater galena is so highly regarded among collectors worldwide, despite galena itself being an extremely common mineral.
