A striking cluster of doubly-generated Calcite scalenohedra showcasing an extraordinary interplay of colors: intense red and black dogtooth crystals grown alongside transparent scalenohedra, crowned by a distinct secondary crystallization overlaying part of the group. Sharp cristalline faces, rich color zoning and a dynamic, multi-generational growth pattern make this a striking Mexican calcite for the discerning collector.

This is a superb cluster of scalenohedral Calcite crystals from the world-famous Santa Eulalia Mining District in Chihuahua, Mexico, one of the largest carbonate replacement silver-lead-zinc deposits on the planet. The specimen displays the classic 'dogtooth' scalenohedron habit, with sharp, elongated crystal faces meeting at well-defined edges, and it is exactly this combination of form and color that gives the piece its striking presence.

The group is built from two distinct generations of growth. An initial phase produced deep red and jet-black scalenohedra, their coloration concentrated along growth zones and crystal faces, intergrown with glassy, transparent scalenohedra of the same habit. A later, secondary crystallization then developed over portions of the first-generation crystals, adding a further layer of complexity and depth to the piece and creating the layered, almost sculptural look typical of the finest Santa Eulalia calcites.

The contrast between the deep red and black tones and the clear, glassy crystals produces a dramatic play of color and transparency across the cluster, while the crystal faces retain excellent luster and definition. Santa Eulalia has been mined since the early eighteenth century and remains one of the classic Mexican mineral localities; production in the district has become intermittent in recent decades as the historic West Camp workings approach exhaustion at depth, which adds to the desirability of well-formed, aesthetic pieces like this one reaching the market today.

This cluster is a genuine collector's specimen: naturally formed, with no artificial enhancement, combining rarity of color, complexity of growth, and strong display appeal in a single piece suitable for both a serious systematic mineral collection and a refined interior display.

Calcite is the most stable and widespread polymorph of calcium carbonate, and this specimen displays the classic scalenohedral habit often nicknamed 'dogtooth' calcite, characterized by elongated, steeply pointed crystal faces arranged around a central axis. The red coloration seen on part of the cluster is typically caused by finely disseminated hematite (iron oxide) inclusions within the crystal structure, a well-documented coloring agent in Calcite from this district, while the black coloration is generally attributed to fine inclusions of manganese oxide or carbonaceous/organic material trapped during crystal growth. The piece also shows a recognizable multi-generational growth structure: an initial phase of colored scalenohedra was followed by a later, secondary crystallization event that partially overgrew the first-generation crystals, a phenomenon well known from the Santa Eulalia district and often associated, in some specimens from this locality, with a manganese-related orange fluorescent response under shortwave UV light; as this has not been confirmed on this specific piece, we recommend verifying it under a UV lamp.

  • Formula: CaCO3
  • Key chemical elements: Calcium, Carbon, Oxygen
  • Hardness (Mohs scale): 3
  • Mineral class: Carbonates
  • Crystal system: Trigonal
  • Crystal habit: Scalenohedral ('dogtooth'), multi-generational growth
  • Formation: Hydrothermal carbonate replacement deposit
  • Color: Red and black (with transparent crystals), color zoned
  • Fluorescence: Not confirmed on this piece; some Santa Eulalia scalenohedral calcite shows orange shortwave UV fluorescence due to manganese content
  • Locality status: District mined since the 18th century, with intermittent production as historic workings approach exhaustion

Santa Eulalia, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, is considered the largest example of a carbonate replacement deposit in the world, and mining in the district dates back to the early eighteenth century, making it one of the oldest continuously exploited mining areas in Mexico. The district's West Camp mines are especially famous among mineral collectors for producing multi-generational scalenohedral Calcite, sometimes nicknamed 'Mariposa' or 'butterfly' calcite for its distinctive layered growth phases. Specimens from this locality are prized worldwide for their vivid color zoning, sharp dogtooth crystal habit, and the complex growth history preserved within a single cluster.

In crystal healing traditions, Calcite is regarded as a stone of cleansing and amplification, believed to clear stagnant energy and help restore emotional balance and clarity of mind. Red Calcite is associated with vitality, grounding, and the release of past traumas, while black varieties are linked to protection, stability, and the absorption of negative energy. Together, practitioners suggest that a piece combining both tones can support emotional harmony while encouraging a calm, focused state of mind. Please note that these interpretations are not scientifically proven.
