This is an exceptional cluster specimen from the mineral-rich basaltic terrain of Iraí, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — a region long celebrated among collectors for producing some of the world's finest fluorescent Calcite. The piece consists of numerous well-formed, translucent white Calcite crystals radiating from a common base, showing sharp, lustrous crystal faces and the characteristic stepped, scalenohedral terminations typical of this locality. The crystals are perched dramatically on a matrix richly coated in green copper oxide crusts, creating a strong chromatic contrast between the pale, glassy Calcite and the deep green host rock.

The true highlight of this specimen, however, only reveals itself under ultraviolet light: exposed to a UV lamp, the Calcite crystals transform dramatically, glowing an intense, saturated red, and continue to emit a visible glow for a short time after the UV source is removed — a genuine phosphorescent effect that is considerably rarer than fluorescence alone. This dual UV response, combined with the fine crystal aesthetics and the honest, natural formation of the cluster, makes this a piece of real interest for both systematic and fluorescent mineral collections.

Iraí sits within the vast basaltic trap system of southern Brazil, a region famous worldwide for its amethyst-bearing geodes, where Calcite commonly forms as a secondary mineral lining the cavities alongside quartz and copper-bearing crusts. Calcite is a carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO₃, one of the most widespread and structurally versatile minerals on Earth, capable of crystallizing in an enormous variety of habits. In its purest form, Calcite is colorless or white, as seen in this specimen, a result of the high structural purity of the calcium carbonate lattice with minimal trace-element substitution affecting visible light absorption.

The most notable scientific feature of this specimen is its intense red fluorescence and phosphorescence under ultraviolet light. This behavior is caused by trace amounts of manganese (Mn²⁺) substituting for calcium within the crystal structure, acting as an activator ion: when excited by UV radiation, these manganese centers re-emit energy in the red portion of the visible spectrum. The persistence of a visible glow after the UV source is removed indicates a genuine phosphorescent effect, in which excited electrons remain trapped briefly in the crystal lattice before decaying and releasing light — a less common and more prized variant of luminescence compared to fluorescence alone. The green coloration of the surrounding matrix is due to a coating of secondary copper oxide minerals, formed through the oxidation and alteration of primary copper-bearing phases within the host basalt.
