This is an exceptional specimen of Amethyst on Calcite from the Capurru Quarry, near Osilo in the Sassari Province of Sardinia, Italy — a locality widely regarded among collectors as the source of the finest amethyst ever found in Italy. The piece displays a dense crystallization of transparent, well-formed Quartz crystals in a rich violet hue, contrasted beautifully against a base of glistening white Calcite crystals.

What makes this specimen particularly notable is the presence of several crystals showing the scepter and reverse scepter growth habit: in a true scepter, a thin early-stage crystal shaft is later overgrown by a much wider terminal crystal, creating a club-like silhouette, while a reverse scepter shows the opposite sequence, with a wide crystal base narrowing toward the termination. Both are relatively uncommon growth interruptions that add considerable visual interest and collector value to a piece.

The overall crystallization is dense and well balanced, with the amethyst crystals catching the light and standing out sharply against the calcite matrix. The Capurru Quarry itself has been inactive for decades, originally worked for gravel and roadbed material rather than for minerals, which makes fresh material from this classic locality increasingly difficult to find on the market today.

The amethyst in this specimen is a violet-colored variety of Quartz (SiO2), a tectosilicate built from a framework of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra. Its purple color originates from trace amounts of iron impurities incorporated into the quartz structure during growth; natural background irradiation over geological time converts this iron into color centers that absorb light and produce the characteristic violet tone. The accompanying Calcite (CaCO3) is a carbonate mineral, here forming lustrous white crystalline crusts and globular growths that contrast with the amethyst.

Several of the quartz crystals on this piece display the scepter and reverse scepter growth habit, a crystallographic curiosity that occurs when crystal growth is interrupted and resumes under different conditions: in a scepter, a narrow early crystal is capped by a wider later-stage crystal, while a reverse scepter shows the inverse taper, with a broad base narrowing toward the tip. Both minerals formed within gas cavities (vugs) in the volcanic host rock at Capurru Quarry, where hydrothermal fluids deposited quartz and calcite over time. The quarry itself has been abandoned for several decades, having originally been worked for gravel rather than minerals, which adds to the rarity of well-crystallized material from this locality today.

The Capurru Quarry near Osilo is considered by mineral collectors to be the source of the finest amethyst specimens ever found in Italy, prized for their exceptional color and transparency compared to amethyst from other Italian localities. Ironically, the site was never mined for its crystals at all: it was originally quarried for gravel used in embankments and roadbeds, with amethyst-lined pockets discovered only incidentally within the volcanic rock. The quarry has been abandoned for several decades, and although its distinctive tower and rusting machinery remain visible from a distance, the site no longer produces new specimens, making pieces like this one increasingly scarce.

In crystal healing traditions, Amethyst is regarded as a stone of calm and clarity, believed to support meditation, intuition and restful sleep, while also being associated with protection from negative energy. Calcite is traditionally linked to cleansing and amplifying energy, said to promote emotional balance and a sense of grounding.
