This is a fine natural specimen of sodalite from the Orotumba deposit, within the Swartbooisdrif Dikes complex, in the Epupa area of the Kunene Region, northwestern Namibia. The piece shows an intensely saturated, deep blue body color, one of the most sought-after hues within the sodalite group, enhanced here by a network of fine white calcite veining running across the surface and creating a bold, elegant chromatic contrast between the two minerals.

The surface is smooth and glossy, typical of the massive, compact habit in which sodalite most commonly forms at this locality rather than as isolated, well-terminated crystals. This texture allows the deep blue color and the branching white veins to stand out clearly, giving the piece strong aesthetic and display value.

The material comes from an active open-pit mine operated specifically to extract high-quality blue sodalite from the alkaline dike swarm of the Swartbooisdrif-Epembe Igneous Province, an area well known among geologists and collectors for producing some of the finest gem-grade blue sodalite in the world. The specimen is completely natural, with no dyeing or artificial treatment involved, and is well suited both to mineralogical collections and to display.

Sodalite is a tectosilicate of the feldspathoid group, with the general formula Na8(Al6Si6O24)Cl2. Its intense blue color is caused by trace sulfur species trapped within the aluminosilicate framework: current spectroscopic research attributes the color to sulfur radical chromophores, commonly described as S3- ions, substituting into the chlorine sites of the sodalite cage structure — a coloring mechanism closely related to the one responsible for the blue color of lazurite in lapis lazuli.

At the Orotumba locality, sodalite occurs within alkaline dikes of the Swartbooisdrif-Epembe Igneous Province, emplaced into ancient metamorphic basement rocks. Here it typically forms as massive, compact material rather than as well-developed individual crystals, and is commonly cut across by later-stage carbonate veining, such as the fine white calcite seen in this specimen, which crystallized within fractures in the host rock.

The Swartbooisdrif-Epembe area of northwestern Namibia is one of the world's most important sources of gem-quality blue sodalite, mined from a swarm of alkaline dikes intruded into ancient Precambrian basement rocks — a geological setting quite different from the classic nepheline syenites in which sodalite is more typically found elsewhere.
