This is a superb combination specimen of Realgar on Calcite from the legendary Jiepaiyu Mine (also known as the Shimen Mine), located in Shimen County, Changde Prefecture, Hunan Province, China. The realgar crystals reach a notable size of up to 3cm, displaying a well-developed, harmonious growth that allows the crystal faces and prismatic forms to be fully appreciated. The color is an intensely saturated fire-red, one of the most sought-after hues in the mineral kingdom, and it stands in striking visual contrast against the pale, translucent calcite crystals that accompany it, creating a scenographic and highly decorative piece.

The Jiepaiyu deposit is recognized as the largest carbonate-hosted arsenic deposit in Asia and the largest realgar mine in China, having been worked for more than 1,500 years. The mine has since been shut down by Chinese authorities due to severe environmental and arsenic contamination concerns, meaning that fine combination specimens like this one, especially from the classic finds of the 1990s and early 2000s, are becoming increasingly difficult to find on today's market.

This is a completely natural specimen, prized both for its mineralogical value and for its striking aesthetic impact, making it an excellent addition to a serious mineral collection or a distinctive display piece.

Realgar is an arsenic sulfide mineral with the formula As4S4, whose intense fire-red to orange-red color is an intrinsic property of the mineral itself rather than the result of a trace impurity: the color arises directly from the arsenic-sulfur bonding within its own molecular cage structure, making realgar one of the few minerals whose vivid hue is a defining characteristic of the pure compound. This same structure, however, makes realgar a textbook case of light-induced mineral alteration: prolonged exposure to visible light (particularly wavelengths above roughly 500 nm) breaks the weaker arsenic-arsenic bonds in the crystal lattice, gradually converting the mineral into pararealgar, a yellow polymorph with an identical chemical formula but a different crystal structure. For this reason, specimens should be kept away from strong or prolonged light exposure and stored in a closed display case or box to preserve their original color over time; brief viewing does not cause noticeable damage.

The Calcite present in this specimen, a calcium carbonate (CaCO3), crystallizes in the trigonal system and typically forms translucent to transparent crystals; here it provides both a structural support and a striking pale backdrop that enhances the visual contrast with the red realgar crystals. Realgar itself crystallizes in the monoclinic system, generally as short, striated prismatic crystals with well-formed terminations when growth conditions are favorable, as is visible in this specimen. As an arsenic-bearing mineral, realgar is mildly toxic; normal handling of an intact specimen poses minimal risk, but hands should be washed after contact and the piece should not be ground, ingested, or handled by children.

Realgar's name derives from the Arabic term "rahj al-ghar," meaning "powder of the mine," a reference to its long history as a source of red pigment in the ancient world. For centuries it was known as "ruby sulfur" or "ruby of arsenic" thanks to its resemblance to precious red gemstones, even though its extreme softness and toxicity made it unsuitable for jewelry.

The Jiepaiyu Mine in Hunan is one of the most historically important arsenic mining sites in the world, worked for over a millennium and famous among collectors for producing some of the finest gemmy realgar crystals ever found, particularly during the classic finds of the 1990s. Due to the severe arsenic contamination the mining activity caused in the surrounding villages, the mine has since been permanently shut down, adding to the rarity and collectible value of specimens recovered before its closure.

In crystal healing traditions, Realgar is considered a stone of transformation and courage, believed to help release stagnant energy patterns and support the process of personal change. Its intense fiery color is associated with the base and sacral chakras, said to stimulate vitality, motivation, and creative drive.
