This remarkable calcite specimen comes from the Fengjiashan Mine, also known as the Daye Copper Mine, in Hubei Province, China. It showcases a spectacular tree-like cluster built from at least two generations of crystal growth: an initial scalenohedral core is overtaken by a striking second generation of calcite, its faces glassy and intensely lustrous, richly tinted by inclusions of brick-red hematite that trace the crystal faces and growth zones in bold contrast against the paler, near-colorless calcite beneath.

The scalenohedral terminations are sharply defined, with crisp edges and well-developed crystal faces that catch the light beautifully, giving the whole specimen an almost architectural, branching silhouette reminiscent of a small tree — a form that collectors of Fengjiashan calcite prize highly. The interplay between the glassy transparency of the calcite and the warm red tones of the hematite inclusions produces a dynamic color contrast rarely matched by calcite from other localities.

The Fengjiashan Mine was originally developed as a copper deposit but ceased profitable copper extraction some decades ago; today it is privately worked mainly for wollastonite, with fine mineral specimens like this one recovered as a byproduct of ongoing industrial excavation. This combination of generous size, exceptional luster, and vivid hematite coloration makes this piece equally suited to a serious systematic collection or as a striking display object in a refined interior.

Calcite (CaCO₃) is a calcium carbonate mineral belonging to the carbonate class, crystallizing in the trigonal system. This specimen displays the classic scalenohedral habit often nicknamed "dogtooth" calcite, developed here in at least two distinct growth generations: an early scalenohedral core subsequently overgrown by a second generation of even more lustrous, sharply terminated crystals in scepter-like arrangement.

The vivid brick-red coloration is caused by microscopic inclusions of hematite (Fe₂O₃) trapped along growth zones and crystal faces during crystallization, rather than by iron substituting directly into the calcite structure itself. This mechanical inclusion of iron oxide, rather than a true structural chromophore within the calcite lattice, explains the patchy, zoned distribution of red color typically seen on Fengjiashan calcite specimens, concentrated on certain faces while others remain colorless and glassy.

The calcite crystallized within a skarn-type iron-copper deposit, precipitating from hydrothermal fluids circulating through the contact zone between intrusive rock and carbonate host rock. The Fengjiashan Mine, formerly worked for copper, is today mined mainly for wollastonite, making fine calcite specimens like this one an increasingly scarce byproduct of ongoing industrial extraction.
