This is a completely natural, rare and truly important calcite specimen from the Fengjiashan Mine (also known as the Daye Copper Mine) in Hubei Province, China — one of the world's most celebrated localities for this distinctive style of calcite. The piece shows the classic two-stage growth typical of the finest Fengjiashan calcites: an initial scalenohedral crystal was subsequently overgrown by a second generation of calcite, which wraps around and caps the original crystal in a tiered, mushroom- or pagoda-like architecture that collectors prize highly. This second-generation surface is exceptionally lustrous, almost glassy, and is vividly marked by brick-red hematite inclusions that trace the growth zones of the crystal, producing a dramatic contrast against the paler, more translucent calcite beneath.

The crystal faces are sharp and well-defined, allowing the scalenohedral ("dogtooth") form and the successive growth striations to be clearly appreciated. Despite the change in target ore, the mine's skarn-related pockets have yielded some of the most sought-after Chinese mineral specimens of the last decades, including hematite-included "pagoda" or "mushroom" calcite like this piece, prized amethyst-calcite combinations, and even the rare species hubeite, for which Fengjiashan is the type locality.
