Zeolite
The term zeolite designates not a single mineral but an entire family of hydrated aluminosilicates built from corner-sharing SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra that form open, cage-like frameworks. A zeolite is a crystalline, microporous aluminosilicate built from corner-sharing SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra, and substituting Al for Si leaves the framework with a net negative charge, balanced by exchangeable cations sitting in the pores. This architecture gives zeolites their famous molecular-sieve behavior in industry, but for collectors the same cavities are what produce the group's spectacular crystal habits. The group includes dozens of distinct species prized on the mineral market: stilbite, heulandite, chabazite, natrolite, mesolite, scolecite, analcime, laumontite, thomsonite, mordenite, gmelinite and the rare goosecreekite, each with a characteristic crystal form, from bow-tie sheaves to needle-like sprays to stubby rhombohedra.
The world's richest zeolite deposits occur in the amygdaloidal basalts of the Deccan Traps in Maharashtra, India, where quarrying around Pune, Nasik and Jalgaon has produced legendary pockets of peach and salmon-pink stilbite, tabular heulandite, chabazite and needle-fine scolecite and mesolite, often on a matrix of chalcedony alongside apophyllite. Chabazite, mordenite and apophyllite are also found in this assemblage, typical for the Poona area in the Sahyadri Mountains. Beyond India, classic zeolite localities include the basalt plateaus of Iceland, notably Berufjörður near Djúpivogur, the Faroe Islands, the Isle of Skye in Scotland, the trap rocks of northern New Jersey, and the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, where stilbite is the provincial mineral. Exceptional rarities come from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec, known for unusual analcime associations, and from Oregon basalts rich in natrolite and analcime, while Sardinia, Italy serves as the type locality for stilbite-Na.
Collectors seek zeolites for the sheer diversity of habit and color packed into a single mineral family: lustrous bow-tie stilbite twins, silky heulandite fans, cubic-looking chabazite rhombohedra, and the fibrous natrolite-mesolite-scolecite series forming radiating sprays and spherical clusters. Mesolite specimens are of particular interest to collectors specializing in zeolite minerals, while scolecite crystals from the Poona quarries can reach imposing size, forming sheaves alongside stilbite and laumontite. Associated species like apophyllite, calcite and quartz frequently accompany zeolites in the same basalt cavities, making a single specimen a compact lesson in secondary mineral formation. Because each species reflects a specific pocket chemistry and cooling history, well-labeled zeolite specimens are valued both for their aesthetic, often jewel-toned crystal sprays and for their scientific interest to systematic collectors building a full suite of the zeolite group.
