This attractive specimen showcases the classic association between two of India's most celebrated secondary minerals: brilliant blue Cavansite and clear, sheaf-like Stilbite. The Cavansite forms radiating spherulitic rosettes built from tiny acicular crystals, packed densely enough to create a saturated, almost electric blue surface with a vitreous to pearly sheen. Surrounding and supporting these blue clusters are multiple crystallizations of Stilbite, developed as thin, translucent to transparent white blades arranged in delicate sheaf-like sprays.

The piece comes from the Wagholi quarry complex near Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, widely regarded as the single most important source of gem-quality Cavansite anywhere in the world. The mineral occurs there inside gas vesicles and cavities within basalt flows belonging to the Deccan Traps, one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth, where Cavansite and its associated zeolites crystallized from mineral-rich fluids circulating through the cooling lava. Large-scale quarrying in this area began in the late 1980s, and while the historic pockets have become increasingly difficult to access as extraction continues, specimens of this quality remain a benchmark for the species.

The overall composition offers a strong chromatic and textural contrast: the deep blue Cavansite rosettes stand out sharply against the bright white Stilbite blades and the darker basalt matrix, giving the piece considerable aesthetic and display value alongside its mineralogical interest.

Cavansite is a hydrous calcium vanadium silicate whose name is a direct contraction of its own chemistry: CAlcium, VANadium, SIlicate. Its intense blue color is caused by the vanadium ion in the +4 oxidation state, which sits within the crystal structure and absorbs almost all visible light except a narrow blue band, producing the mineral's signature electric-blue to greenish-blue hue. Cavansite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system as tiny acicular prisms that radiate outward from a common center, forming the spherulitic rosettes visible on this specimen.

Stilbite, by contrast, is a calcium-sodium aluminosilicate belonging to the zeolite group, built around an open framework of linked silicon and aluminum tetrahedra capable of hosting water molecules and exchangeable cations within its channels. It typically develops as sheaf-like or bow-tie shaped aggregates of thin, pearly white to colorless blades, a habit clearly visible in the crystals accompanying the Cavansite on this piece.

Both minerals formed together as secondary, low-temperature deposits inside gas vesicles and cavities within the basalt lava flows of the Deccan Traps, one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth, where mineral-rich fluids slowly crystallized within the cooling rock over geological time.

Cavansite was first identified in 1967 in Malheur County, Oregon, where it received its name as a direct contraction of its own chemistry: CAlcium, VANadium, SIlicate. That original find, however, produced only modest, low-quality material.

It was the quarries around Wagholi, near Pune, that turned Cavansite into a true mineral-collecting phenomenon. Since large-scale basalt quarrying exposed cavansite-bearing rock there in the late 1980s, the overwhelming majority of fine Cavansite specimens sold worldwide have come from this single Indian locality, making it essentially synonymous with the species among collectors.

The name Wagholi is thought to derive from a local word for tiger, a reminder of a time when the surrounding countryside was still wild enough for tigers to threaten nearby villages.
