This is a fine, entirely natural Stilbite specimen from Wasson's Bluff, one of the most celebrated zeolite localities in the world, on the shore of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada. The site has been collected by mineralogists since the early nineteenth century and is best known for producing lustrous golden-yellow stilbite fans alongside chabazite and natrolite, formed within cavities and veins of the Triassic North Mountain Basalt.

The crystals on this piece display the classic tabular, sheaf-like habit of the species, with numerous thin plates radiating outward and gathering into the characteristic bow-tie and fan-shaped groupings that give Stilbite its name, derived from the Greek word for to shine. The faces are notably bright and reflective, catching the light across well-defined terminations and giving the whole specimen a scenic, almost sculptural quality. The intense golden-yellow saturation of the crystals is a hallmark of top Wasson's Bluff material and adds considerable visual and collector appeal to the piece.

Access to Wasson's Bluff is today strictly regulated, as the site enjoys protected status under Nova Scotia provincial law and collecting is only permitted along the tidal beach exposure, never from the cliffs themselves. This makes well-formed, richly colored specimens like this one increasingly difficult to source, adding to their long-term collector interest. The piece is well suited both to a systematic mineralogical collection and as a striking natural object for display in refined interiors.

Stilbite belongs to the zeolite group of framework silicates, minerals built from an open, cage-like aluminosilicate structure capable of absorbing and releasing water without breaking down internally. The dominant calcium-rich variety, Stilbite-Ca, crystallizes in the monoclinic system and typically forms as thin tabular plates that twin repeatedly on the {001} face, producing the sheaf-like and bow-tie clusters this specimen shows so clearly.

The warm golden-yellow color seen in this piece is a well-documented trait of Wasson's Bluff material and is generally attributed to fine iron oxide inclusions and staining within the zeolite's channel structure, a common coloring mechanism in basalt-hosted zeolites where hydrothermal fluids carry iron-bearing solutions through the host rock during crystallization. Stilbite itself is essentially colorless when pure, so any yellow, peach or brown tone reflects these secondary iron-related impurities rather than the base mineral chemistry. The crystals formed through low-temperature hydrothermal alteration of gas cavities and fracture veins within the Triassic-age North Mountain Basalt, a process that also produced the chabazite and natrolite commonly found alongside stilbite at this locality.

Wasson's Bluff is far more than a mineral locality: the same red sandstones and basalt cliffs that host the stilbite have also yielded some of the world's smallest dinosaur fossils, preserved within the overlying McCoy Brook Formation. The name Stilbite itself comes from the Greek word for to shine, chosen because of the mineral's characteristically bright, pearly luster on its cleavage faces. Interestingly, chabazite crystals found alongside stilbite at this same Nova Scotia coastline were once given their own separate name, acadialite, after the historic French colony of Acadia, before mineralogists determined the two were chemically identical and the name was dropped. Today, because Wasson's Bluff is a legally protected site where collecting is allowed only on the beach at low tide, well-formed golden stilbite specimens like this one are becoming progressively harder to find.
