This is a striking and genuinely uncommon specimen combining spherical Gyrolite with fluffy Okenite, collected from the basalt vugs of the Pune region in Maharashtra, India — part of the vast Deccan Traps volcanic province. The main Gyrolite sphere displays a lustrous green surface with visible radial striations, the result of countless lamellar crystals growing outward from a common center in a perfectly radiating pattern. Around this principal sphere, several smaller Gyrolite balls have developed, echoing the same radial symmetry on a miniature scale and adding depth and rhythm to the overall composition.

Nestled among the green spheres are soft, cotton-like tufts of white Okenite, formed by extremely fine, silky acicular crystals radiating from small points of attachment. The delicate, almost hair-like texture of the Okenite creates a striking visual and tactile contrast against the smooth, glassy faces of the Gyrolite, a combination that is highly sought after among collectors of Indian zeolite-association minerals. Both species rest on a matrix of associated zeolites, typical of the mineral-rich cavities found within the ancient basalt flows of the Deccan region.

The overall crystal formation is notably well developed, allowing the individual crystal faces of the Gyrolite lamellae to be clearly appreciated under good lighting. The specimen showcases the kind of aesthetic balance and structural clarity that makes Gyrolite-Okenite associations from this part of India particularly desirable, especially given that well-formed Gyrolite of this quality is considered an uncommon find compared to the more frequently encountered zeolite species from the same basalt cavities.

Gyrolite is a rare phyllosilicate, chemically described as a basic sodium calcium silicate hydrate, that typically forms as spherical or radiating aggregates lining cavities in hydrothermally altered basalt. Its characteristic globular habit results from numerous flattened, pseudo-hexagonal lamellar crystals growing outward from a common nucleus, producing the striated, ball-like surface visible on this specimen. The green coloration seen here is generally attributed to trace inclusions of iron-bearing clay-type minerals, such as celadonite, that are commonly present within the basalt cavities of the Deccan Traps and can be incorporated into the growing Gyrolite structure, tinting an otherwise typically white or colorless mineral.

Okenite, in contrast, is a hydrous calcium silicate that crystallizes as extremely fine, silky, acicular fibers, often radiating outward in soft, cotton-ball-like clusters — a texture so distinctive it gave rise to the popular collector nickname of 'cotton ball' okenite. Both minerals are typical secondary products of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration within amygdules and vugs of basaltic lava flows, where they commonly grow alongside true zeolite species, forming the mineral associations for which the Deccan Trap localities of Maharashtra are internationally renowned.

The name Gyrolite comes from the Greek word 'gyros', meaning circle, a direct reference to the mineral's characteristic round, radiating habit that gives rise to its distinctive spherical growths.

Okenite is named after the German naturalist and philosopher Lorenz Oken, and despite its zeolite-like appearance and frequent association with true zeolite minerals, it is not itself a zeolite — a distinction that was only correctly recognized in the nineteenth century after early confusion in classification.

Both minerals occur in cavities within the basalt of the Deccan Traps, an enormous volcanic province formed by intense eruptions roughly 65 million years ago, whose cooling lava flows later created the mineral-rich vugs where Gyrolite, Okenite and countless zeolite species are found today.

Indian exporters have long taken particular care in packing these delicate specimens individually, since the fine acicular Okenite crystals are easily damaged during transport.
