This is a genuine, completely natural specimen of Heulandite from the celebrated zeolite deposits of the Fassa Valley (Val di Fassa), Trento Province, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The Fassa Valley is one of the most historically important zeolite localities in the Alps, its basaltic volcanic rocks having produced amygdule-hosted zeolite crystals studied by mineralogists since the early days of modern mineralogy.

The specimen displays well-formed, harmoniously grouped crystals showing the tabular, slightly wedge-shaped outline typical of the heulandite series, distributed evenly across the host matrix. The crystals show the vivid blood-red coloration for which Fassa Valley heulandite is particularly prized, a hue produced by microscopic inclusions of iron oxide trapped within the porous zeolite framework during crystal growth. This striking red tone stands out sharply against the matrix, creating a vivid visual contrast that gives the piece notable aesthetic appeal alongside its mineralogical interest.

Heulandite belongs to the zeolite group of tectosilicates, minerals renowned for their open, channel-riddled crystal structure. This porosity allows the framework to absorb, exchange and release water molecules and cations, a property exploited industrially in water softening and filtration.

Heulandite-Ca, a hydrous calcium sodium aluminosilicate, is by far the most common member and the one typically found at Alpine basalt localities such as the Fassa Valley.

The crystals typically form as tabular, wedge-shaped individuals with a distinctive coffin-like outline, often showing curved or wavy faces and occasional contact twinning, a feature that reflects the underlying monoclinic symmetry of the mineral. The vivid blood-red color seen on this specimen is caused by finely dispersed inclusions of iron oxide trapped within the porous aluminosilicate framework during crystallization - a well-documented coloring mechanism for red heulandite from this locality and comparable Alpine basalt occurrences.

Heulandite crystallizes within amygdules, the gas bubbles frozen into basaltic lava flows, where percolating hydrothermal fluids slowly deposited zeolite minerals inside the cavities over long geological timescales. The same open, channel-riddled framework that gives the species its attractive pearly cleavage surfaces also gives it valuable cation-exchange properties, which is why zeolites of the heulandite type are used industrially in water softening and filtration.
