Stilbite at Wasson's Bluff formed within veins and cavities of the Triassic-age North Mountain Basalt, crystallizing in a sequence following earlier-formed chabazite, quartz and heulandite as hydrothermal fluids evolved within the cooling volcanic rock.

The orange coloration in this specimen comes from iron oxide staining — introduced by iron-rich groundwater that percolated through the basalt after the zeolites had formed — rather than being an intrinsic part of stilbite's own chemistry, which is naturally colorless to white. This is why coloration varies so much between localities: the same species can appear white, salmon-pink or deep orange depending entirely on the iron content of the local groundwater and host rock, explaining the visible difference between this Canadian material and the paler stilbite typically seen from India.
