Baryte
Baryte (also spelled barite), a barium sulfate (BaSO₄), is prized by collectors for its extraordinary range of crystal habits and colors combined with a surprising heaviness for a non-metallic mineral. It typically forms tabular, blade-like or prismatic crystals in the orthorhombic system, often intergrown in parallel groups, and occasionally as rosette "desert rose" aggregates or fibrous, botryoidal masses. Colors run from colorless and white through honey-yellow, blue, brown, red and green, depending on trace inclusions.
Classic tabular yellow crystals come from the Meikle Mine in Nevada and honey-colored specimens from Elk Creek, South Dakota, while gemmy blue prismatic baryte is typical of Stoneham, Colorado. Cave-in-Rock, Illinois yields fine baryte with fluorite and calcite, and brown "desert rose" rosettes are iconic of Oklahoma and Morocco's Khenifra and Mibladen districts. European hunters look to Frizington in Cumbria for coxcomb crystals, Les Malines in France, and the historic Villamassargia and Santa Lucia Mine localities in Sardinia, Italy, prized for orange-yellow crystals on fluorite. Romania's Baia Sprie and Cavnic mines contribute realgar-tinted red baryte, while China's Hunan and Guizhou provinces produce vivid blue tabular clusters.
Baryte forms mainly in low-to-medium temperature hydrothermal veins alongside galena, sphalerite, fluorite, calcite and dolomite, and in sedimentary evaporite sequences with celestine, anhydrite and gypsum. Its diagnostic weight, lack of acid reaction and often striking fluorescence make it a rewarding species to identify, while the sheer diversity of habit and locality-specific color keeps baryte a perennial favorite among systematic and aesthetic mineral collectors alike.
