From the legendary Coud'a workings at Mibladen, Morocco, comes this exceptional specimen of vanadinite on black baryte, prized for its outstanding aesthetic contrast and crystal quality. A dense colony of well over 100 blood-red vanadinite crystals blankets the specimen, each individual crystal showing sharp hexagonal prism faces and flattened terminations typical of the finest Mibladen material. The crystals are piled and stacked thickly upon one another, creating a richly textured, almost sculptural surface that catches the light beautifully across every facet.
Beneath this fiery red crust rises a jagged crest of black baryte, whose bladed, crystallized structure provides a dramatic and elegant backdrop to the vanadinite above. The stark contrast between the intense red of the vanadinite and the deep black of the baryte matrix is the defining feature of this piece, giving it a bold, gallery-worthy presence.
Mibladen has been the world's premier source of fine vanadinite for decades, and the Coud'a workings in particular are regarded as one of the two most important producing zones for top-quality vanadinite in the entire district. The area is mined today through hard, hand-dug tunnels by local miners working the old galena and baryte deposits, since the industrial Mibladen mine itself ceased large-scale operations decades ago — every fine pocket recovered now is the result of considerable manual effort, adding to the desirability of well-crystallized pieces like this one.

Vanadinite is a secondary lead chlorovanadate mineral belonging to the apatite group, forming in the oxidized zones of lead deposits under arid climatic conditions — exactly the environment found at Mibladen. Its striking blood-red color is caused directly by vanadium in the V⁵⁺ oxidation state sitting within the vanadate (VO₄) tetrahedral groups of the crystal structure: this vanadium chromophore strongly absorbs blue and green wavelengths of visible light, allowing red and orange wavelengths to dominate what the eye perceives.
The contrasting black baryte crest forming the matrix is barium sulfate, normally colorless or white in its pure form; the deep black coloration seen here is attributable to fine inclusions, most likely manganese oxide coatings or organic/carbonaceous impurities within the crystal structure, a coloration effect that has been documented on baryte specimens from this same Mibladen locality.
The vanadinite crystals display the classic sharp, flattened hexagonal prisms typical of the finest Mibladen material, piled densely in a crust over the bladed baryte crystals beneath, a combination that has made this Moroccan locality world-renowned among collectors of secondary lead minerals.

The Coud'a workings are considered one of the two most important sources of top-quality vanadinite specimens within the entire Mibladen mining district, with a particularly spectacular pocket of vanadinite discovered there in June 2001. The site is divided into three separate segments, worked by local miners who tunnel by hand through solid rock for weeks at a time to reach productive pockets deep underground.
Mibladen itself has been mined since the early twentieth century, primarily for lead ore, but the large-scale industrial mine closed decades ago. Today the old workings and shafts are explored by artisanal Moroccan miners searching specifically for vanadinite and baryte specimens, which explains why fresh, well-crystallized material — like this piece — continues to reach collectors despite the closure of the original commercial operation.
Interestingly, vanadinite also played a role in the history of chemistry: the element vanadium, responsible for its brilliant red color, was named after Vanadis, the Norse goddess of beauty, after its discovery in the early nineteenth century.
