Celestine
Celestine (also known as celestite) is a strontium sulfate mineral, SrSO4, and a member of the barite group alongside barite and anglesite. It typically forms in sedimentary environments as diagenetic fillings within evaporite sequences, often intergrown with gypsum, anhydrite, and native sulfur, though hydrothermal and volcanic occurrences are also known. Its orthorhombic, tabular to prismatic crystals range from pure colorless through the mineral's signature powder to sky-blue tones, and occasionally orange or reddish shades caused by trace impurities.
The type locality is Bell's Mill in Blair County, Pennsylvania, but the finest gem-grade blue crystals and geodes come from Sakoany on Madagascar's northwest coast, discovered in 1967 along the Betsiboka River. Equally celebrated is the Crystal Cave at Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio — home to celestine crystals reaching several feet across and considered the world's largest known geode. Sicily's Agrigento and Caltanissetta sulfur mines produce pale blue to colorless crystals associated with sulfur and gypsum, a pairing echoed at the Machow Mine in Tarnobrzeg, Poland. Other important sources include Spain's Puente Tablas and Catalonia deposits, Yate near Bristol in England, and Tunisia's Hammam-Zriba Mine, known for rare red celestine.
Collectors prize celestine for its delicate celestial-blue color, sharp crystal terminations, and often blue-white fluorescence under shortwave UV light. As the world's principal ore of strontium, it also carries important industrial history, yet fine geode specimens and lustrous tabular crystals remain most valued as display and collector pieces rather than for extraction.
