This fine Celestine specimen comes from Beineu-Kyr, a remote and highly sought-after locality tucked in the Tuarkyr Mountains, near Geok Tepe in the Ahal Region of Turkmenistan. Although pieces from this deposit are sometimes loosely associated with the former Soviet sphere and mislabeled with a generic 'Russia' provenance, the locality is precisely documented as Turkmenistan, part of Central Asia, and the material is exceptionally scarce on the international market.

The specimen displays lustrous, water-clear, gemmy Celestine crystals with a tabular-prismatic habit and sharp, well-defined edges, sitting in striking contrast against a warm orange host matrix. The crystals formed inside limestone geodes, a classic habit for this locality, and their transparency and quality of cristallization place this piece among the finer examples of the find.

Beineu-Kyr celestine is considered a true rarity among collectors: material from this deposit was recovered mainly between the late 1980s and the 1990s, and to date no further mining activity has been reported at the site, meaning every surviving specimen represents a finite, historic supply. The vivid orange coloration of the matrix, combined with the gem clarity of the crystals, creates a naturally elegant visual balance that enhances both the aesthetic and mineralogical value of the piece.

Celestine is a strontium sulfate mineral, chemically close to baryte and anglesite within the sulfate group, with which it can form a solid-solution series. In its purest form the crystal lattice contains no chromophore elements, which is why fine, inclusion-free Celestine crystals — like the ones on this specimen — typically grow perfectly transparent and colorless rather than displaying the pale blue tone the species is best known for.

The contrasting orange color of the host matrix on this piece is not due to the Celestine itself but to iron oxide, specifically hematite, present as fine inclusions within the surrounding carbonate rock. This is a well-documented coloring mechanism at the Beineu-Kyr locality, where celestine crystals are typically found lining limestone geode cavities with a red-to-orange hematite-stained matrix, creating the same visual contrast seen here.

Celestine at this locality forms through low-temperature precipitation of strontium sulfate from mineralizing fluids circulating within cavities of sedimentary limestone, a formation process consistent with the tabular, beveled crystal habit typical of Beineu-Kyr material.

The name Celestine derives from the Latin word for 'heavenly' or 'sky-colored', a reference to the soft pale blue tone often shown by the species, even though many specimens — including transparent examples like this one — occur in colorless or near-colorless form.

Turkmenistan is an unusual and rarely cited source for mineral specimens on the international market, and celestine from Beineu-Kyr is considered one of the country's most distinctive mineralogical exports. Most of the material that reached Western collections was gathered in the final years of the Soviet Union and shortly after its dissolution, when a handful of specimens made their way out of Central Asia through private collectors and small dealer networks.

Because no further collecting has been documented at Beineu-Kyr since that period, surviving specimens are treated by specialists as a closed chapter in celestine mineralogy — a snapshot of a locality that appeared briefly and has not been revisited since.
