The celestine displays excellent natural growth, with well-formed prismatic faces and a double crystallization habit, meaning groups of crystals have developed in two distinct directions across the specimen, adding depth and dimensionality to the piece.

The contrast between the bright, snowy celestine and the saturated yellow of the sulfur matrix is the true highlight of this specimen, and it is entirely natural with no artificial enhancement. This pairing of celestine on sulfur is considered a true Italian classic, historically associated with the sulfur-mining district around Caltanissetta in central Sicily.

The specimen comes from the La Grasta Mine, a sulfur deposit worked from 1850 until operations definitively ceased in 1987. This piece brings together two classic minerals of the Sicilian sulfur belt: colorless-to-white celestine (strontium sulfate) and native sulfur. Celestine here forms slender, well-terminated prismatic crystals with sharp, lustrous faces; its characteristic whiteness results from the absence of chromophore elements within the pure strontium sulfate lattice, so incoming light is simply reflected and refracted by the transparent to translucent crystal structure rather than being selectively absorbed. The vivid yellow color of the associated sulfur, by contrast, is an intrinsic property of the native element itself: elemental sulfur is built from puckered eight-membered ring molecules (S8) that absorb light in the blue-violet part of the visible spectrum, reflecting back the intense yellow hue for which the mineral is famous. Both species crystallized together within the gypsum-sulfur sedimentary sequence typical of the central Sicilian deposits, where celestine commonly grew in cavities and fractures closely associated with the sulfur-bearing limestone.
