A striking specimen of botryoidal Calcite from the classic Campomorto Quarry, showcasing numerous rounded, translucent yellow spheres in vivid contrast against a dark, rough-textured basalt (tephritic lava) matrix. The radiating globular aggregates display a soft, waxy luster typical of this historic Lazio locality, prized by collectors for its bold color contrast and a botryoidal habit rarely encountered elsewhere in Italy.

This eye-catching specimen showcases dozens of lustrous, translucent yellow Calcite spheres erupting from a dark, rugged matrix of tephritic lava — a volcanic rock commonly referred to in the mineral trade as "basalt." Each globular aggregate is built from radiating fans of microcrystalline calcite, giving the spheres their characteristic botryoidal (grape-like) surface and a soft, waxy luster that catches the light beautifully. The deep egg-yolk to amber-yellow tone of the crystals stands in striking contrast against the near-black host rock, creating one of the most visually dramatic combinations found among Italian calcite specimens.

The piece comes from the Campomorto Quarry, in the Pietra Massa locality near Montalto di Castro, Viterbo Province, in the Lazio region of central Italy — a classic, long-recognized source of spherical yellow calcite that first became popular among collectors in the late 1980s. While the quarry remains periodically active for basalt extraction, fine mineralogical specimens of this quality and size have grown increasingly scarce on the market over the following decades, adding to the appeal of this piece for both aesthetic and systematic collections.

The overall crystallization quality is excellent, with well-formed, evenly distributed spheres across the matrix and a pleasing balance between mineral and host rock. This is a genuinely decorative and scientifically interesting specimen, equally suited to display in a mineral cabinet or as a standout piece in any Italian mineral collection.
