This is a fine cluster of dogtooth calcite, the popular collector name given to the scalenohedral crystal habit that resembles a canine tooth. The crystals display good natural formation, with sharply pointed terminations and clean, well-defined faces that let light play across their surfaces and reveal the internal symmetry of the trigonal crystal system. The overall tone is a soft, milky white, consistent throughout the cluster and giving the piece a bright, luminous presence.

The specimen comes from Gola del Furlo, a dramatic limestone gorge carved by the Candigliano river in the Fossombrone area of the Marche region. The gorge is internationally known among geologists and fossil collectors for its thick sequence of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones, rich in ammonite fossils, but well-crystallized mineral specimens such as calcite clusters are considerably rarer to come across on the market, which adds genuine collector interest to this piece.

Since 2001 the gorge has been protected as a State Natural Reserve, and the old limestone and marble quarries that once operated in the area are now largely inactive, meaning fresh material of this quality is increasingly difficult to obtain. This combination of aesthetic quality, sharp crystal definition and uncommon provenance makes the specimen equally suited to a serious mineralogical collection or as a refined display piece.

Calcite is the most stable and widespread polymorph of calcium carbonate, and this specimen shows the scalenohedral crystal habit commonly nicknamed 'dogtooth' calcite because its elongated, sharply pointed crystal faces resemble a row of canine teeth. This habit forms when calcium-carbonate-rich groundwater slowly precipitates calcite within fractures and small cavities inside limestone bodies, allowing crystals to grow freely and develop sharp, well-defined faces.

The milky-white color seen in this piece is not caused by a coloring trace element, as calcite in its pure form is colorless to white. Instead, the opaque, milky appearance typically results from countless microscopic fluid or gas inclusions and tiny internal cleavage fractures within the crystal lattice, which scatter incoming light rather than transmitting it cleanly. This is different from colored calcite varieties, where hues are usually caused by trace transition metals such as manganese, iron or cobalt substituting within the structure.

The specimen originates from the limestone walls of Gola del Furlo, a gorge whose rock sequence spans roughly 200 million years of marine sedimentation and is particularly famous for its abundant ammonite fossils. Quarrying activity in the area has been essentially discontinued since the gorge was designated a State Natural Reserve in 2001, making new calcite material from this specific locality increasingly scarce.

The Gola del Furlo is one of the most striking gorges in central Italy, cut by the Candigliano river between Monte Pietralata and Monte Paganuccio, and is often nicknamed the 'Grand Canyon of Italy'. Its rocky walls expose more than 200 million years of geological history, and the ancient Roman emperor Vespasian even had a tunnel carved through the narrowest point of the gorge in 76-77 AD to allow the Via Flaminia to pass through.

The limestone that forms these walls is exceptionally rich in ammonite fossils, so much so that several fossil species were first described here and named after the locality itself. Since 2001 the entire gorge has been protected as a State Natural Reserve, which has effectively brought quarrying activity in the area to a halt, making well-formed mineral specimens like this calcite cluster increasingly hard to find.
