You can search our catalog using different mineral attributes. For example, you can search by color such as green, yellow or purple, or by chemical elements such as uranium, calcium or iron, or by mineral groups such as phosphate, silicate or carbonate. You can also filter by crystal habit like crystal, geode or crystal on matrix, by specimen size such as thumbnail, small, medium or cabinet, and by features such as radioactive or fluorescent minerals.

Sulfur

Sulfur (native S) is one of the most beloved of all mineral species — a brilliant, resinous-lustered element mineral prized for its saturated, sunny yellow color and sharp bipyramidal crystals. It forms in volcanic fumaroles, hydrothermal vents, and — most famously — in sedimentary cap-rock deposits associated with gypsum, celestine, aragonite, and bituminous limestone.

The classic locality is Sicily, Italy, where mines such as Cozzo Disi, Girgenti (Agrigento), Cianciana, Racalmuto, and the Floristella Mine produced the finest gemmy, transparent crystals ever found, often perched on white calcite or aragonite matrix. On the Italian mainland, the Perticara Mine in Rimini Province is another historic source. Beyond Italy, important specimens come from the Machów mine in Poland, the Conil Mine in Spain, the Vodinskoye deposit in Russia, and the modern powerhouse locality of El Desierto in Potosí, Bolivia, which yields large gemmy crystal plates on crumbly matrix.

Collectors seek Sulfur for its intense color saturation, sharp crystal habit, and the striking contrast it makes against pale carbonate matrices. Because most sulfur is now mined by the destructive Frasch process, fine crystallized specimens from historic hard-rock deposits are increasingly scarce, making well-formed Sicilian and Bolivian pieces especially collectible for both mineralogical and aesthetic value.
