Sphalerite

Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral, (Zn,Fe)S, and by far the world's most important ore of zinc, also yielding by-product cadmium, indium, and gallium. Prized far beyond its industrial role, sphalerite is one of the most versatile collector minerals: it crystallizes in tetrahedral and dodecahedral forms with a resinous to adamantine luster, and its dispersion actually exceeds that of diamond, giving gemmy honey and orange crystals an extraordinary internal fire when backlit. Color ranges widely with iron content, from near-colorless and pale yellow "cleiophane" through honey, orange, and red "ruby sphalerite" to the dark brown and black iron-rich variety known as marmatite. It typically forms in hydrothermal veins and Mississippi Valley-Type deposits alongside galena, pyrite, fluorite, dolomite, and calcite, and also occurs in volcanogenic massive sulfide ores and skarns.

The benchmark locality is the Elmwood Mine in Tennessee, USA, source of large, gemmy honey to cognac-brown crystals classically composed with saddle-shaped dolomite and deep purple fluorite. Spain's Áliva Mine in the Picos de Europa is the type source of vivid red-orange "ruby sphalerite," while the Balkan sulfide fields of Trepča in Kosovo and Madan in Bulgaria are famous for sharp, lustrous black marmatite crystals on quartz and galena. Mexico's Naica mine, Chihuahua, has produced gemmy honey to red-brown crystals with calcite and galena, and Santa Eulalia is another classic Mexican source. Peru's Huanzala and Huaron mines yield brilliant resinous brown crystals with pyrite, and Dal'negorsk in Russia produces intricately faceted crystals on snowy calcite. Other historic sources include the Tri-State district (Joplin, Missouri; Picher, Oklahoma; Galena, Kansas), the Franklin and Ogdensburg deposits of New Jersey, the Binntal/Lengenbach quarry in Switzerland, Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia, and the Kangjiawan and Nandan mines of China.

Because it forms across such geologically diverse, historically significant districts, sphalerite appeals to collectors across every level, from affordable black marmatite clusters to museum-grade, color-saturated matrix specimens commanding serious premiums. Its perfect dodecahedral cleavage in six directions makes fine, undamaged crystals genuinely scarce, so sharp terminations, mirror-bright faces, and striking associations with fluorite, galena, quartz, or dolomite are the hallmarks collectors seek. Some material is also triboluminescent and fluoresces under ultraviolet light, adding further appeal for specimen and display collectors alike.
