Kunzite
Kunzite is the delicate pink-to-lilac gem variety of spodumene, a lithium aluminum silicate (LiAlSi2O6) belonging to the pyroxene group. First described in 1902 from the Pala district of San Diego County, California, and named the following year by Charles Baskerville in honor of gemologist George Frederick Kunz, this stone owes its soft rose, violet, and orchid tones to trace manganese substituting within its crystal lattice. Kunzite forms in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites alongside minerals such as albite, lepidolite, petalite, and beryl, crystallizing in the monoclinic system as elongated, deeply striated prisms. One of its most prized diagnostic traits is strong pleochroism: the same crystal can appear nearly colorless along one axis and a saturated violet-pink along another, a feature collectors and gemologists use to distinguish genuine kunzite from imitations.
The classic type locality remains the Pala district, including the historic Himalaya Mine and Oceanview Mine, where fine gem-quality lilac crystals were first pulled from the pegmatites. Today the most important producing region is Minas Gerais, Brazil, especially the pegmatite fields around Governador Valadares, Conselheiro Pena, and Galileia, source of some of the largest and most vividly colored kunzite specimens ever recovered, including museum pieces exceeding several hundred carats. Afghanistan's Nuristan and Kunar provinces are famed for exceptionally saturated, elongated pink-violet crystals often associated with fine tourmaline and morganite in the same pegmatites, while Madagascar (Ampandrandava, Antsirabe) and Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region round out the list of significant world sources. Related spodumene varieties worth noting alongside kunzite include the chromium-green hiddenite, first found at Hiddenite, North Carolina, and the yellow variety known as triphane.
Collectors seek kunzite for its unusual combination of gemmy transparency, generous crystal size, and gentle evening-glow color that shifts with lighting and orientation. Because natural color can fade with prolonged sunlight exposure, well-documented, locality-labeled matrix specimens from Brazil, Afghanistan, or the original Californian pegmatites command particular respect among mineral collections, standing alongside spodumene's broader significance as a major lithium ore mineral mined industrially in Australia's Greenbushes pegmatite and the DRC's Manono deposit.
