You can search our catalog using different mineral attributes. For example, you can search by color such as green, yellow or purple, or by chemical elements such as uranium, calcium or iron, or by mineral groups such as phosphate, silicate or carbonate. You can also filter by crystal habit like crystal, geode or crystal on matrix, by specimen size such as thumbnail, small, medium or cabinet, and by features such as radioactive or fluorescent minerals.

Ilvaite

Ilvaite is a black, iron-rich calcium sorosilicate first described in 1811 on the island of Elba, Italy, from which its name derives (Latin "Ilva"). It typically forms elongated, striated prismatic crystals with a sub-metallic, almost tourmaline-like luster, along with columnar and granular masses. With a hardness of 5.5–6 and a specific gravity near 4, it is a dense, satisfying mineral to hold, and it is structurally related to lawsonite as part of the broader lawsonite group.

The type locality, Rio Marina and Capo Calamita on Elba, remains classic for well-formed crystals to 2 cm in skarn contact with dolomite, often accompanied by pyrite, magnetite, hematite and goethite. Exceptional, larger specimens come from Seriphos in Greece, historically prized for crystals up to 10 cm, and from the Huanggang Mine in Inner Mongolia, China, now the source of the finest and largest ilvaite crystals on the market. Other notable occurrences include Dal'negorsk in Russia, the Laxey mine in Idaho, Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, and the Ilímaussaq intrusion in Greenland.

Formed through contact metamorphism and skarn mineralization, ilvaite is prized by collectors for its bold black crystal habit, its historic ties to Elba's classic mining districts, and its relative scarcity in fine, lustrous, well-terminated form compared to more common skarn minerals.
