Hubnerite

Hübnerite is a manganese tungstate, MnWO4, forming the manganese-rich end of the wolframite group series with iron-rich ferberite. It typically forms elongated, bladed, or tabular monoclinic crystals with a submetallic to resinous luster, in shades ranging from deep reddish-brown to almost black, often showing a striking wine-red to cherry-red translucence when backlit. Crystals frequently occur in parallel-growth clusters perched on gemmy quartz, making them highly prized display specimens.

The classic locality for fine hübnerite is the Pasto Bueno district in Ancash, Peru, where mines such as the Huayllapon Mine have produced world-class lustrous blades associated with quartz, fluorite, and rhodochrosite. Other important Peruvian occurrences include the Mundo Nuevo Mine in La Libertad. In the United States, the type locality is the Ellsworth (Mammoth) Mining District in Nevada, with additional notable finds from the Adams Mine in Colorado and the Black Pine Mine in Montana, the latter also famed for veszelyite.

Collectors seek hübnerite for its combination of vivid color, crystal habit, and mineralogical significance as a key member of the tungsten ore minerals alongside scheelite and ferberite. Fine Pasto Bueno pieces in particular are considered classics of the Peruvian mineral trade, valued for their aesthetics on quartz matrix.
