Goethite
Goethite is an iron oxyhydroxide, FeO(OH), and the most common iron oxide species on Earth, forming through the weathering of iron-rich minerals in soils, gossans, and banded iron formations. Named after the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it typically appears as botryoidal, reniform, or stalactitic masses of radiating fibrous crystals, though sharp acicular or bladed crystals are prized when found. Collectors especially value its frequent role as a pseudomorph, faithfully replacing pyrite, marcasite, siderite, and even gypsum while preserving the original crystal form.
Classic crystallized specimens come from the Restormel Royal Iron Mine in Cornwall, England, and the Botallack mine, while Germany's Siegen district and Herdorf (the type locality) remain historically important. In the United States, the Lake George and Crystal Peak pegmatite areas of Colorado produce exceptionally lustrous acicular sprays, and Michigan's Ishpeming and Keweenaw Peninsula districts supply fine layered and banded material. Notable pseudomorphs after pyrite are found at Pelican Point, Utah, while Morocco's Bou Tazoult and Egypt's Farfara Oasis yield striking acicular and branching goethite in geodes.
Goethite is also a common inclusion in quartz and amethyst, producing golden-brown needle sprays sometimes marketed under names like cacoxenite amethyst, and its iridescent, rainbow-toned coatings from localities such as Spain's Tharsis mine make it a favorite among mineral and gemstone collectors alike. Its velvety botryoidal crusts, dramatic pseudomorph forms, and rich brown-to-black color range make goethite a rewarding species for both systematic collections and display specimens.
