Cobaltokoritnigite
Cobaltokoritnigite (also spelled cobaltkoritnigite) is a rare hydrous cobalt arsenate, formally described as the cobalt analogue of koritnigite. It crystallizes in the triclinic-pinacoidal system and typically forms tiny reddish-violet rosettes and crusts, a secondary species produced by the oxidation of cobalt-bearing arsenides and sulfarsenides in the near-surface zone of ore veins.
The mineral is best known from the historic silver-cobalt veins of the Schneeberg district in the Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany, where it forms as a weathering product of glaucodot and as an alteration product of cobaltite. Additional occurrences have been documented in the Czech Republic, Japan, and Morocco. Typical associated minerals include erythrite, kottigite, sphaerocobaltite, pitticite, arsenopyrite, löllingite-safflorite, quartz, calcite, and baryte.
Because of its scarcity and minute crystal size, cobaltokoritnigite is a true connoisseur's species, prized by micromount and thumbnail collectors specializing in secondary cobalt-arsenate minerals from the Saxon Erzgebirge and other classic arsenide districts. It is easily mistaken for erythrite, from which it is distinguished mainly by subtle color differences, adding an extra layer of interest for systematic species collectors seeking authenticated, well-labeled examples of this rare mineral.
