Chalcopyrite
Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide with the formula CuFeS2, crystallizing in the tetragonal system and standing as the most abundant and economically important ore of copper on Earth. Its brassy to golden-yellow color and metallic luster often lead to confusion with pyrite and gold, but chalcopyrite is notably softer, scratched easily with a knife, and displays a diagnostic greenish-black streak. Collectors especially prize its natural iridescent variety, nicknamed peacock ore, where surface tarnish develops brilliant blue, purple, and red hues — though much of the commercially sold peacock ore has been acid-enhanced. Chalcopyrite typically forms in hydrothermal veins, porphyry copper deposits, volcanogenic massive sulfide bodies, and as disseminations in igneous and metamorphic rocks, commonly associated with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, bornite, and quartz, and it is the parent mineral of countless secondary copper species such as malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, and cuprite.
Typical crystallized material is widespread, with classic historic occurrences in Cornwall (England), where large sphenoid crystals have been collected since the 18th century, and in Romania's Cavnic and Baia Sprie mines, prized for sharp, lustrous specimens on quartz matrix. Exceptional specimens come from more particular localities: Dalnegorsk in Russia produces crystals up to 12 cm, Yaogangxian Mine in Hunan, China, is today the world's foremost source of large, brilliantly iridescent sphenoid crystals, and Peru's Huanzalá Mine and the Cerro de Pasco district yield sharp crystals combined with pyrite and galena. Mexico's Zacatecas, Concepción del Oro, and San Martín localities are noted for fine twinned crystals, while Bulgaria's Madan district, Slovakia's Banská Štiavnica, and Kosovo's Trepča mines round out the classic European suite. In the United States, the Tri-State district spanning Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma produced abundant crystallized material, and specimens from Bisbee, Arizona and Colorado's Camp Bird Mine are also well represented in collections.
Beyond its role as the world's chief copper ore since ancient smelting began over five thousand years ago, chalcopyrite draws collectors for the striking contrast between its metallic golden luster and the rainbow tarnish of natural peacock ore, its excellent crystal habit on contrasting matrix minerals like barite, calcite, and dolomite, and its affordability relative to rarer sulfides. Its widespread distribution across dozens of countries — from Germany's Dreislar Mine to Australia's Broken Hill and Mount Lyell — makes it a cornerstone species for any systematic sulfide or copper-mineral collection.
