Beryl
Beryl is a beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate with the formula Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈, crystallizing in the hexagonal system and famous as the parent species of some of the world's most celebrated gemstones. Pure beryl is colorless, but trace elements substituting for aluminum produce its many prized varieties: chromium and vanadium yield the deep green of emerald, iron produces the blue of aquamarine and the yellow of heliodor (golden beryl), while manganese is responsible for the pink of morganite and the exceptionally rare red of red beryl (formerly called bixbite). Colorless specimens are known as goshenite, named after the type locality of Goshen, Massachusetts. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8, beryl typically forms in granitic pegmatites, though emerald requires the unusual coincidence of beryllium-rich fluids meeting chromium- or vanadium-bearing schists and mafic rocks. Classic emerald localities include the mica-schist deposits of the Ural Mountains in Russia, the mines of Habachtal in Austria, and above all the bituminous limestone deposits of Muzo and Chivor in Colombia, alongside major modern producers such as the Kagem mine in Zambia. Aquamarine and other pegmatite varieties are best known from Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Bahia in Brazil, the Shigar and Skardu districts of Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan, the Erongo region of Namibia, and Madagascar. Fine morganite comes from the Pala and Mesa Grande districts of San Diego County, California — including the White Queen and Stewart mines — as well as from Afghanistan's Nuristan province and the Doce Valley pegmatites of Brazil. Heliodor and etched green beryl crystals from Volodarsk-Volynskii in Ukraine are prized by collectors, while red beryl is famously restricted to a handful of Utah localities, above all the Wah Wah Mountains' Ruby-Violet Claim and the Thomas Range. Beryl's appeal to mineral collectors lies equally in its gemological glamour and its geological rarity: fine terminated crystals, gem pockets in miarolitic cavities, and enormous crystal finds — including a giant beryl from Malakialina, Madagascar, and multi-ton crystals from Albany, Maine — have made it a cornerstone of systematic and aesthetic collections alike. Historically an important beryllium ore mineral, beryl today is valued above all for its role as the source species of emerald, aquamarine, morganite, heliodor, goshenite, and red beryl, each carrying its own devoted following among collectors and gemologists worldwide.
