This is a genuinely appealing specimen of natural Emerald, the green gem variety of beryl, collected from the world-famous Pizzo Marcio dyke in the Vigezzo Valley, Piedmont, Italy. The piece displays well-formed hexagonal prismatic crystals of a fresh green color, set directly onto a matrix of milky white quartz that creates a vivid and elegant chromatic contrast between the gemmy green beryl and the pale host rock.

Pizzo Marcio is considered one of the classic Alpine-type emerald localities in the world, and specimens from this dyke are highly sought after precisely because true beryl crystallizations from Alpine environments are uncommon on the international market, most emerald production worldwide coming instead from tropical pegmatite or schist deposits. The crystal faces show the typical prismatic development of beryl, with terminations and edges that remain crisp and well individuated against the granular quartz groundmass.

Emerald is the green gem variety of Beryl, a cyclosilicate of beryllium and aluminum. Its intense green color is not an intrinsic feature of pure beryl, which is naturally colorless, but is caused specifically by traces of chromium (Cr3+) and, in many localities, vanadium (V3+) that substitute for aluminum within the crystal structure, acting as chromophores that absorb light in a way that produces the characteristic green hue. At Pizzo Marcio, this chromium and vanadium enrichment is explained by the unusual geological setting: the beryl-bearing pegmatite dyke intruded directly into chromium-rich metaperidotite and serpentinite rocks, and metasomatic exchange between the pegmatitic fluids and the ultramafic host rock supplied the chromium and vanadium needed to color the growing beryl crystals green, a mechanism typical of the so-called Alpine-type or schist-hosted emerald deposits. The crystals typically show a well-developed hexagonal prismatic habit, growing outward from a micaceous or quartz-rich matrix, as seen in this specimen where the green prisms stand out clearly against the white quartz groundmass.

The Pizzo Marcio emerald occurrence was discovered on June 30, 1974 by Vittorio Mattioli, and it quickly became one of the most celebrated Alpine mineral localities in the world, thanks to the presence of gem-quality beryl variety emerald in an unusual high-altitude alpine setting. The mineralized dyke outcrops for only about 60 metres along the north face of the mountain, at an elevation of roughly 1750-1790 metres, making every collected specimen a genuinely limited find from a very restricted natural exposure. Unlike most commercial emerald deposits, which form in tropical pegmatites or black shale sequences, the Pizzo Marcio emeralds grew inside an albitised pegmatite dyke intruded into ancient metaperidotite and serpentinite rocks belonging to an ophiolitic nappe, a geological setting that is exceptionally rare for this gem variety.
