This natural siderite specimen comes from the Brosso Mine, in the municipalities of Brosso and Lessolo, in the Canavese district of Piedmont, Italy — one of the most historically significant alpine iron deposits in the region. The piece is completely natural and untreated, and shows a dense, tightly packed aggregation of lamellar crystals that almost entirely cover the host matrix, creating a textured, richly patterned surface.

The crystals display the characteristic flattened, plate-like habit typical of siderite lamellar twinning, a diagnostic feature of the species that produces thin, stacked layers intergrown at defined angles, visible as subtle striations across the crystal faces. The overall arrangement highlights the crystal forms effectively, giving the specimen strong three-dimensional depth and a pleasing rhythmic texture across the matrix.

The dominant brown metallic color is consistent with the iron-rich composition of siderite, and the specimen's aesthetic value is enhanced by the contrast between the darker crystal faces and the lighter matrix beneath. The Brosso deposit formed as a skarn-type mineralization at the contact between intrusive rock and metamorphosed carbonate host rock, a classic alpine hydrothermal setting that also produced other notable species at this locality, including baryte, galena and rare boron minerals.

A specimen of solid mineralogical interest, well suited for both display and systematic collections, coming from a mine that has been inactive for decades and is therefore increasingly difficult to source on today's market.

Siderite is an iron carbonate mineral with the chemical formula FeCO3, belonging to the calcite group of rhombohedral carbonates, in which iron replaces calcium in the crystal structure. This structural substitution of Fe2+ for Ca2+ is the direct cause of the mineral's characteristic brown to yellowish-brown color: the presence of divalent iron in the octahedral sites of the lattice absorbs light in a way that produces the warm, earthy tones typical of the species, with darker or more metallic-looking tones often associated with a higher iron content or minor manganese substitution.

This specimen shows a lamellar crystal habit, formed through twinning on the {01-12} plane, a well-documented and diagnostic feature of siderite in which thin plate-like crystal layers intergrow at defined angles, producing the flattened, stacked appearance and subtle surface striations visible on this piece. Siderite of this type forms in low-to-medium temperature hydrothermal veins, commonly associated with iron skarn deposits such as the alpine contact-metamorphic mineralization at Brosso, where fluids rich in iron and carbonate precipitated within fractures and cavities in the host rock.

The Brosso Mine, an iron skarn deposit worked historically for magnetite and later pyrite, ceased all mining activity in 1964, making specimens from this locality increasingly difficult to find on today's collector market.

The Brosso Mine, together with the nearby Traversella mine, formed one of the most important iron mining districts of the Italian Alps, historically worked first for magnetite and later, more intensively, for pyrite, which was used in the production of sulfuric acid. The mining company Montecatini continued operations mainly for pyrite extraction until 1964, when the mine was permanently closed, making it a depleted and historically important locality.

Beyond siderite, the Brosso Mine is particularly famous among mineralogists as the type locality of canavesite, a rare magnesium borate-carbonate first identified here in the 1970s and found in only one other locality worldwide. The site is also well known for fine specimens of baryte, galena and unusual boron minerals such as ludwigite and szaibelyite, formed within magnetite skarns at the contact between intrusive rock and marble.
