This is a fine example of Siderite from the legendary Brosso Mine in the Valchiusella area of Piedmont, northern Italy — one of the classic historic iron mining districts of the Italian Alps. The specimen displays dense, closely packed lamellar crystal aggregates arranged in fan-shaped clusters, a habit that reflects the characteristic curved, lens-like rhombohedral crystal distortion typical of siderite from this locality.

What makes this piece particularly noteworthy is its coloration: a pale, uncommon yellow tone that stands out against the typical brown to reddish-brown crusts usually seen on Brosso siderite, which normally form due to partial surface alteration into iron oxides. Here, that oxidative coating is largely absent, allowing the paler, warmer yellow tone of the underlying iron carbonate to remain visible — a combination collectors consider both aesthetically pleasing and mineralogically distinctive for the species.

The Brosso Mine, together with the nearby Traversella deposit, was worked historically for iron and pyrite ore, with underground operations that have since ceased; the site is today largely depleted and no longer commercially active, which makes well-preserved specimens increasingly difficult to source on today's market.

Siderite is an iron carbonate mineral (FeCO₃) belonging to the calcite group of carbonates, crystallizing in the trigonal crystal system. The color of siderite is fundamentally governed by its ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) content within the carbonate structure, which is responsible for its typical yellow-brown to grey-brown base tones.
