The crystallization displays the characteristic trapezohedral habit typical of leucite, a form inherited from its high-temperature cubic crystallization that is retained even after the mineral internally transitions to a lower-symmetry structure upon cooling.

What makes this piece particularly notable is the presence of well-developed twinned crystals, a feature that adds both visual complexity and scientific interest, as twinning in leucite is directly linked to the phase transformation the mineral undergoes during cooling from its volcanic host rock. Leucite is a tectosilicate belonging to the feldspathoid group, with the chemical formula KAlSi2O6. Its composition is dominated by potassium, aluminum, silicon and oxygen, and it is typical of silica-undersaturated, potassium-rich volcanic rocks such as leucitites and leucite basalts. The characteristic white to greyish color of leucite is explained by the absence of transition-metal chromophore elements such as iron or chromium in its structure — the mineral is essentially colorless to white in pure form, with any yellowish or reddish tints arising from trace inclusions or minor impurities rather than from a structural chromophore.

One of the most distinctive scientific aspects of leucite is its crystallographic behavior on cooling: it forms initially with a cubic, isometric structure at high temperature (around 900°C), then transforms into a tetragonal structure below roughly 600-700°C while retaining its original external trapezohedral shape — a so-called pseudo-trapezohedron. This same phase transition is responsible for the polysynthetic twin lamellae and twinned crystal growth commonly observed in leucite, including the twinning visible on this specimen, making leucite a textbook example of displacive phase-transformation twinning in mineralogy.

The Roccamonfina Volcanic Complex, an ancient and now dormant volcanic edifice in Campania, is one of the best-known Italian sources of well-formed leucite crystals, alongside the more famous Vesuvius area. Thanks to its high potassium content, leucite is also studied as a potential slow-release potassium source for agricultural fertilizers.
