This attractive specimen unites two mineral species that are emblematic of the Ligurian ophiolitic terrains: bright reddish-orange Hessonite garnet crystals set against vivid green Clinochlore, creating a bold and naturally elegant color contrast. The Hessonite crystals display well-formed dodecahedral faces with a pleasing luster, while the Clinochlore appears as foliated, platy green aggregates filling the spaces around and between the garnet crystals, softening the overall composition and enhancing the visual balance of the piece.

The specimen comes from Rocca della Biscia, near Sassello, in the Savona Province of Liguria, a locality well known among Italian mineral collectors for producing fine Hessonite associated with Clinochlore, Diopside and Vesuvianite. Mineralogically, these crystals formed within rodingite bodies, calcium-rich metasomatic rocks generated where mafic dikes were altered inside serpentinized ultramafic rocks of the Voltri Massif, part of the Ligurian ophiolitic sequence uplifted during the Alpine orogeny. This distinctive geological setting is responsible for the unusual association of a calcium garnet with a magnesium-iron chlorite in the same rock.

The overall quality of crystallization and the aesthetic balance between the two contrasting colors make this an interesting piece both for systematic garnet collections and for anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of Ligurian ophiolite minerals.

This specimen combines two classic minerals of the Ligurian ophiolites. Hessonite is an orange-red variety of Grossular garnet, and its warm color is caused specifically by trace amounts of ferric iron (Fe3+) substituting within the garnet's atomic structure, replacing aluminum in the octahedral sites. Clinochlore, the green mineral accompanying it, is an iron- and magnesium-bearing member of the chlorite group, whose green color originates from ferrous iron (Fe2+) incorporated within its phyllosilicate sheet structure. Both minerals crystallized together within rodingite bodies, calcium-rich metasomatic rocks formed where mafic dikes were altered inside serpentinized peridotites of the Voltri Massif, part of the Ligurian ophiolitic sequence uplifted during the Alpine orogeny. The Hessonite crystals show the typical dodecahedral habit of garnet, commonly modified by trapezohedral faces, while Clinochlore forms platy, foliated aggregates that fill the interstices between the garnet crystals, producing the attractive color contrast that makes this locality distinctive.

The name Hessonite comes from the Greek word for 'inferior,' a reference to its slightly lower hardness and density compared to other garnet varieties, not to its aesthetic value, which is in fact highly prized in gemology and mineral collecting alike. Rodingite rocks, the host rock type for this specimen, take their name from the Roding River in New Zealand, where they were first described, and they occur worldwide wherever mafic rocks have been altered within serpentinized ultramafic bodies. The Savona Province of Liguria, and the area around Sassello in particular, has long been recognized in Italian mineralogical literature as one of the country's classic localities for well-formed Hessonite crystals associated with Clinochlore, Diopside, and Vesuvianite, making specimens from this area historically significant for Italian systematic collections.
