This is a fine example of the intensely yellow Fluorite for which the Hilton Mine, in the Scordale valley of Cumbria, is internationally celebrated. The specimen displays a cluster of well-developed cubic crystals in a rich, glassy, golden-yellow hue, with several crystals showing clear penetration (interpenetrating) twinning — a classic and highly prized habit for this locality, in which two cubes grow through one another along a shared axis, producing sharp, symmetrical re-entrant angles across the crystal faces.

The surfaces are lustrous and the crystal edges well defined, giving the piece a strong three-dimensional presence and excellent play of light across its faces. Yellow Fluorite is considerably scarcer at Hilton than the purple and green varieties more commonly associated with the North Pennine orefield of Cumbria and neighbouring County Durham, which adds to the desirability of this specimen among both aesthetic and systematic collectors.

The Hilton Mine was originally worked from 1824 for galena, later reopened for witherite and baryte, and finally abandoned in 1963. Most of the fine amber and yellow Fluorite associated with the mine came from the baryte-rich flats of the Dow Scar Level, largely collected in the 1960s and 1970s before underground access became prohibited. The old workings now lie within a military firing range, meaning further collecting from this classic locality is essentially impossible today, which lends specimens like this one lasting rarity and historical significance.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a halide mineral that crystallises in the isometric (cubic) system, most commonly as cubes, though octahedral and more complex forms also occur. This specimen shows the classic cubic habit associated with Hilton Mine material, including penetration twins in which two cubic individuals interpenetrate along a shared crystallographic axis, producing distinctive stepped and re-entrant faces.

The intense golden-yellow colour is attributed to colour centres within the crystal lattice: structural defects in which electrons become trapped at anion (fluorine) vacancies after prolonged natural exposure to background radiation within the host rock over geological time. This same lattice-defect mechanism is also responsible for the mineral's fluorescence, and it was precisely this glow in historic English Fluorite specimens that led 19th-century scientists to coin the term 'fluorescence' itself.

Fluorite from the Hilton Mine formed within hydrothermal veins and associated flats hosted in Carboniferous limestone of the North Pennine orefield, deposited by mineral-rich fluids circulating through the rock at moderate temperatures. The mine, worked historically for galena, witherite and baryte, was finally abandoned in 1963 and now lies within a military firing range, making it permanently inaccessible for further collecting.

The very word 'fluorescence' owes its existence to Fluorite: in the 19th century, physicist George Gabriel Stokes coined the term after studying the vivid glow produced by English Fluorite specimens, very similar to this one, when exposed to ultraviolet light.

The Hilton Mine, source of this specimen, is considered one of the most important historic sources of fine yellow Fluorite in the world. Active in various phases from 1824 until its final abandonment in 1963, the mine now lies within the Warcop military training area in Cumbria, making its legendary Dow Scar Level workings inaccessible today — every surviving specimen is effectively a piece of mining history that can no longer be replaced.
