This is a fine example of Crocoite from the Adelaide Mine, Dundas mineral field, Zeehan mining district, West Coast, Tasmania — widely considered the premier crocoite locality on Earth. The specimen shows slender, elongated prismatic crystals with the intense orange-red color that has made Tasmanian crocoite a benchmark for the species, well distributed across a brown matrix formed by deeply weathered gossan.

The crystals show the typical monoclinic prismatic habit of the species, often developing as slightly hollow, elongated prisms with a bright adamantine to vitreous luster. The Adelaide Mine, originally worked as a silver-lead operation, has for decades been mined specifically for crocoite specimens and continues to be periodically worked by small specialist operations, making well-formed pieces from significant pockets an ongoing but limited source for collectors.

The brown matrix represents the deeply altered, iron-rich gossan characteristic of the Dundas ore field, where lead-bearing sulfide lenses were weathered in contact with chromium-rich serpentinized ultramafic rocks — the exact geological combination required to form crocoite. This specimen is entirely natural and untreated.

Crocoite is a rare lead chromate that forms only under a very specific set of geological conditions: an oxidized lead deposit must come into contact with chromium-rich fluids derived from nearby ultramafic rocks. At Dundas, Cambrian-age serpentinized ultramafics sit alongside galena-bearing lenses, and deep weathering of this assemblage produced the chromium-rich gossans from which crocoite crystallized — explaining why fine specimens are so geographically restricted worldwide.

The vivid orange-red color is caused directly by chromium within the mineral's own chemical structure: crocoite is lead chromate, PbCrO4, and the chromate ion (CrO4) is itself the chromophore responsible for the intense hue, rather than a trace impurity. This is the same chromium-based coloring mechanism that historically made ground crocoite valuable as a natural source of the pigment known as chrome yellow.

Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, crocoite typically develops as elongated, sometimes slightly hollow prismatic to acicular crystals with poorly formed terminations, and is notably soft and fragile (Mohs 2.5–3), which is why specimens require careful handling and protection from vibration.

Today, Crocoite is officially recognized as Tasmania's mineral emblem, a tribute to the extraordinary specimens produced at Dundas.

Despite its brilliant color, Crocoite is a delicate mineral: prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV light can dull its adamantine luster over time, so fine specimens like this one are best displayed away from direct, intense light.
