This is a fine, fully natural aragonite crystal from the Retamal ravine, near Enguídanos in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha — a classic Spanish Triassic (Keuper) locality known among collectors for producing some of the largest and finest aragonite twins ever found.

The specimen shows the characteristic cyclic twinning of aragonite, in which three individual crystals interpenetrate to build a pseudohexagonal prism; the resulting cross-section displays sharp, parallel vertical striations running along the twin composition planes, giving the surface a distinctive ribbed texture. The overall tone is an unusual violet-grey, a coloration that sets this piece apart from the more common reddish-brown aragonites typically associated with Spanish localities.

Retamal ravine material was mainly collected between the 1970s and the 1980s and, due to frequent confusion with the nearby Minglanilla deposit, genuine, correctly attributed specimens from this exact outcrop are uncommon on today's market and appreciated by both aesthetic and systematic collectors.

Aragonite is one of the two common polymorphs of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), sharing its chemistry with calcite but crystallizing in the orthorhombic system rather than the trigonal one. Its most recognizable feature is cyclic twinning on the {110} face: three individual crystals grow together around a shared axis, producing the pseudohexagonal cross-section and the parallel striations visible on this specimen, which mark the twin composition planes.

The violet-grey color of this crystal is attributed to trace element substitution within the aragonite lattice; the structure readily accommodates strontium and other divalent cations in place of calcium, and such substitutions, together with minor manganese-bearing inclusions, are among the impurities most commonly responsible for the blue, grey and violet hues occasionally seen in aragonite from Spanish Keuper deposits.

This aragonite formed within Triassic (Keuper) marls and evaporitic sediments, precipitating from mineral-rich waters in a low-temperature sedimentary environment typical of the Cuenca region. The Retamal ravine outcrop was mainly collected in the 1970s and 1980s and is now considered a largely historic, hard-to-access locality, adding to the rarity of well-documented material.

Aragonite takes its name from Molina de Aragón in Spain, where Abraham Gottlob Werner first described the species in 1797 — making this Cuenca specimen a fitting tribute to the mineral's Spanish origins.

The Retamal ravine deposit is considered one of the finest sources of large twinned aragonite crystals ever discovered, with individual twins historically reaching up to 15 centimeters, though most specimens available today were collected decades ago from a locality that is now largely historic and no longer actively worked.
