This is a genuinely eye-catching Aragonite crystal, prized for its unusual violet colour that shifts gently into paler, almost grey-lilac tones across the same crystal face — a chromatic play rarely seen alongside the mineral's more common white or brown habit. The surface displays the fine, parallel striations that are characteristic of aragonite's prismatic crystal habit, running the length of the crystal and catching the light beautifully when the piece is rotated in hand.

The specimen comes from the Retamal ravine, located south of the village of Enguidanos in the province of Cuenca, Castile-La Mancha, Spain — a Triassic (Keuper) outcrop historically renowned among mineral collectors for producing some of the largest and finest aragonite twins ever found, reaching up to 15 centimetres across. Material from this ravine was mainly collected during the 1970s and 1980s, and pieces from this exact site are frequently mislabeled under the nearby locality of Minglanilla, making a correctly attributed Retamal specimen genuinely uncommon on today's market.

Completely natural and untreated, this Aragonite is a fine addition to any systematic or aesthetic mineral collection, combining strong scientific interest with real display appeal.

Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral, CaCO3, chemically identical to calcite but crystallizing in a different lattice arrangement, which makes it the natural low-temperature, near-surface polymorph of calcium carbonate. This specimen forms an elongated, striated prismatic crystal, with fine parallel growth lines running along its length — a texture typical of aragonite's characteristic acicular-to-prismatic habit.

The distinctive violet colouring seen in this crystal, alternating with paler grey-lilac zones, is attributed to trace amounts of manganese and iron incorporated into the crystal structure during growth, together with a limited substitution of strontium for calcium, which aragonite can accommodate up to a few percent within its lattice. This kind of colour zoning, tied to fluctuating trace-element concentrations during crystallization, is one of the features that makes violet aragonite from this part of Spain particularly sought after by collectors.

Aragonite of this kind forms in low-temperature, near-surface environments; the material from the Retamal ravine crystallized within Triassic-age (Keuper) marls and gypsum-bearing evaporite deposits, a geological setting that favoured the growth of unusually large, well-formed crystals and twins in this specific area.

Aragonite takes its name from Molina de Aragón in Spain, the very town where the mineral was first described in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner. Curiously, the mineral was named after the village itself rather than the wider region of Aragón, a mix-up that persisted in later mineralogical literature.

The Retamal ravine, where this specimen originates, is celebrated in mineralogical circles for having produced some of the largest and finest aragonite twins ever documented, within an ancient Triassic-age (Keuper) outcrop dating back over 200 million years. Because most of this material was collected decades ago, genuine Retamal specimens are considerably harder to find today than examples from other Spanish aragonite localities, and are often confused with material from nearby Minglanilla.

In crystal healing traditions, Aragonite is regarded as a grounding stone believed to help balance emotions, ease stress, and encourage patience and acceptance of change. Violet-toned Aragonite, in particular, is associated with calm introspection and is sometimes used during meditation to support clarity of thought and a sense of inner stability. Some practitioners also associate it with strengthening one's connection to the earth while gently opening awareness to higher states of consciousness.
