This is a substantial Almandine Garnet crystal from the classic Alpine locality of the Seeber Valley, near Moos in Passeier, in the Burggrafenamt district of South Tyrol, Italy. The dark reddish-brown, almost blackish-red crystal displays the rounded rhombododecahedral faces typical of well-formed almandine, its glossy surface catching the light and standing out sharply against the pale, silvery mica flakes that flash across the surrounding schist matrix.

The Seeber Valley area, set high in the Ötztal Alps above Moos in Passeier, is a long-documented and well-regarded source of fine almandine crystals hosted in mica schist, with historical records of collecting activity going back well over a century. Specimens of this size are collected at considerable elevation, in a remote and physically demanding alpine environment, which naturally limits the number of large, well-crystallized pieces that reach the market each year.

The specimen is notable for the equilibrium between the size of the main crystal and the surrounding matrix, and for the strong tonal contrast created by the combination of dark garnet and bright mica. It is a naturally formed, untreated mineral, well suited both to systematic mineralogical collections and to display for its strong visual impact.

Almandine is the iron-rich end member of the garnet group, with the general formula Fe3Al2(SiO4)3. Its deep red to reddish-brown to almost black color is caused specifically by ferrous iron (Fe2+) occupying the dodecahedral sites within the garnet structure, acting as the principal chromophore; minor manganese or additional iron in other structural sites can shift the tone toward a more purplish or brownish red. Almandine crystallizes in the isometric (cubic) crystal system and most commonly develops as rhombododecahedra, sometimes combined with trapezohedral faces, giving the rounded, many-faced habit visible on this specimen. It forms through regional metamorphism of aluminum-rich, iron-bearing sedimentary rocks, typically appearing as porphyroblasts within mica schist and gneiss, as is the case in the historic almandine-bearing schists of the Seeber Valley in South Tyrol.

The Passeier Valley area around Moos in Passeier is so closely associated with garnet that a scenic hiking station along the local Timmel Transit trail near the village is actually shaped like two giant garnet crystals, inspired by the geological formations found in the surrounding mountains. The Seeber Valley itself lies at an elevation of roughly 2,700-2,900 meters, making it one of the more physically demanding alpine localities for garnet collecting, a factor that has always limited the recovery of large, well-formed crystals like this one.
