This is an exceptional Sapphire specimen, a gem-quality variety of Corundum, displaying a deep, intense violet color that sets it apart from the more common blue material typically associated with this mineral. The crystal shows the classic bipyramidal, barrel-like habit often seen in corundum from this deposit, with well-developed faces contributing to a lustrous, almost gem-like brilliance across its surface.

The violet crystal sits in striking contrast against a dark host matrix, composed of the mica-rich schist typical of the Amboarohy deposit near Zazafotsy. This contrast between the saturated purple corundum and the dark, textured groundmass is one of the most visually compelling aspects of the piece, giving it a strong three-dimensional presence that photographs and displays beautifully.

The Zazafotsy Quarry, also known locally as Amboarohy, is one of Madagascar's most celebrated corundum localities, producing well-formed sapphire and ruby crystals hosted in metamorphic schists atop a mountain near the town of Zazafotsy. Specimens combining this crystal size with such a rare violet coloration are seldom found on the market, making this piece a genuine rarity for serious collectors and museum-level displays.
