TETRAHEDRITE & QUARTZ – Historic Mineral Association from Casapalca, Peru (1970)

Historic mineral association of Tetrahedrite with Quartz from the Casapalca Mine, Chicla District, Huarochirí Province, Lima, Peru. Collected in 1970, this specimen represents a classic example of a hydrothermal sulfide–silica paragenesis from one of Peru’s well-known polymetallic mining districts.

The specimen features large, well-developed Tetrahedrite crystals associated with clear Quartz. A natural greenish surface coating is present, typical of secondary alteration processes affecting sulfide minerals over time. The contrast between metallic sulfides and transparent quartz enhances the overall aesthetic and geological interest.

This historic association is highly valued by systematic mineral collectors for its mineralogical significance, provenance, and well-defined crystallization.

Tetrahedrite is a complex sulfosalt mineral with the chemical formula (Cu,Fe)₁₂Sb₄S₁₃. It forms in hydrothermal ore deposits rich in copper and antimony. Quartz is a silicate mineral composed of silicon dioxide with the formula SiO₂.

• Chemical formula: (Cu,Fe)₁₂Sb₄S₁₃ (Tetrahedrite), SiO₂ (Quartz)
• Mineral class: Sulfosalts, Silicates
• Crystal system: Isometric (Tetrahedrite), Trigonal (Quartz)
• Formation: Hydrothermal polymetallic ore veins (historic mining environments)
• Key elements: Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Antimony (Sb), Sulfur (S), Silicon (Si), Oxygen (O)

Tetrahedrite is one of the main copper-bearing sulfosalts found in hydrothermal ore deposits. It commonly forms in association with Quartz and other sulfides in polymetallic systems. Historic specimens from classic mining localities such as Casapalca are particularly valued for their geological context and well-developed mineral associations.

Tetrahedrite, the metallic sulfide forming the dark crystals on this specimen from Casapalca Mine in Peru, is traditionally associated with determination, mental clarity and personal strength. In crystal healing traditions, it is believed to support focus, motivation and the ability to pursue long-term goals, while also encouraging confidence and decisive action. It is often kept by those seeking to turn ideas into tangible results and to build inner resilience during times of change.

Its deep gray to black metallic luster links Tetrahedrite to the Root chakra, traditionally associated with grounding, stability and physical energy. The clear quartz crystals growing alongside it are associated with the Crown chakra, said to support clarity of thought and a sense of connection. Together they are believed to balance grounded strength with mental openness.

These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
