SPESSARTINE GARNET – Reddish-Brown Dodecahedral Crystals, Fujian, China

This is an outstanding specimen of Spessartine, the manganese-aluminum variety of the Garnet group, from the classic Wushan Spessartine Mine near the village of Tongbei, in Yunxiao County, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China. Numerous dodecahedral crystals in an intense reddish-brown to orange hue, with a bright vitreous luster, densely cover a smoky quartz matrix, with several crystals noticeably larger than the surrounding aggregate, adding both aesthetic impact and mineralogical interest to the piece.

Tongbei-area spessartine first reached the international market in 1998, initially and incorrectly attributed to Lechang in Guangdong Province; only at the end of 2001 was Fujian correctly identified as the true source, with Yunxiao named as the nearest large town. The deposit occurs within granite pegmatites and miarolitic cavities, alongside associated minerals such as smoky quartz, feldspar, muscovite and, more rarely, helvite and topaz. Today the Wushan mountain area is a protected zone where new collecting is reported to be prohibited, meaning that fine combination pieces of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the market.

The piece measures 96 x 75 x 62 mm and weighs 299 g, a substantial cabinet-sized specimen ideal for display or for a dedicated locality collection.

Spessartine is the manganese-rich end-member of the Garnet group, a nesosilicate with the general formula Mn3Al2(SiO4)3. Its distinctive reddish-orange to reddish-brown color is caused by Mn2+ ions occupying the structural cation sites, which produce characteristic absorption bands in the visible spectrum around 445, 460, 480 and 520 nanometers; this crystal-field effect of manganese is the defining chromophore for the species, sometimes combined with minor Fe2+ contributing to a browner tone.

Crystallizing in the isometric system, Spessartine typically forms well-developed dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals, as seen in this specimen, where numerous crystals are densely distributed over a smoky quartz matrix. The material originates from granite pegmatites and miarolitic cavities typical of the Tongbei area in Fujian Province, China, where associated minerals include smoky quartz, feldspar, muscovite and, more rarely, helvite and topaz. Since the Wushan mountain area is now a protected zone with collecting reportedly prohibited, specimens of this quality are becoming progressively scarcer on the market.

When the first Chinese garnet-on-smoky-quartz specimens appeared on the international market in 1998, dealers mistakenly labeled them as coming from Lechang, in Guangdong Province. It was only at the end of 2001 that the true source was correctly traced to Fujian Province, with Yunxiao identified as the nearest large city to the actual collecting sites near Tongbei.

Interestingly, while helvite and topaz are also found at the Tongbei sites, fluorite is absent there and instead occurs only at the nearby Yunling locality in Zhangpu County. Today, the Wushan mountain area is a protected zone where new collecting is reportedly prohibited, so genuine Tongbei material now circulates mainly through established dealers, old collections and auction records rather than fresh extraction.
