This is a genuinely scarce specimen of yellow Smithsonite from the Masua Mine, one of the most historically important zinc localities in Sardinia and, arguably, the single most famous source of vivid yellow Smithsonite anywhere in the world. The piece shows a rich, warm yellow coloration typical of the cadmium-bearing material this locality is renowned for, with tonal variation across the surface that reveals the layered, botryoidal growth pattern characteristic of Smithsonite formed as crusts and rounded masses lining karstic cavities.

The specimen has a compact, well-developed structure that lets the natural surface texture and color banding be appreciated from multiple angles, a quality that has made Masua's yellow Smithsonite prized by mineral collectors and gem cutters alike for over a century. Its measurements of 134 x 58 x 11 mm and weight of 230 g make it a substantial cabinet piece with real visual presence.

The Masua Mine, part of the historic Iglesiente mining district in southwestern Sardinia, was worked for zinc and lead ore from the 19th century until its definitive closure in the 1990s. Since mining operations ceased, no new material has been extracted from the deposit, and the yellow Smithsonite once found there now survives only in old private collections, museum holdings, and pieces salvaged decades ago — a fact that makes this specimen a true collector's rarity rather than a common commercial find.

Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate mineral, typically colorless or white in its pure form but capable of displaying a remarkable range of colors depending on trace element substitutions. In this specimen, the vivid yellow coloration is caused by cadmium ions substituting for zinc within the crystal lattice — a chromophore effect well documented for material from the Masua locality, where cadmium-rich fluids interacting with the zinc carbonate produced some of the most intensely colored yellow Smithsonite known anywhere in the world.

Structurally, Smithsonite rarely forms well-defined rhombohedral crystals; instead it typically develops as botryoidal, stalactitic, or crust-like masses, precipitating on the walls of karstic cavities within limestone in what geologists classify as a Mississippi Valley-type deposit. This is exactly the depositional environment recorded at Masua, where zinc-bearing solutions percolating through carbonate rock formed rounded, grape-like aggregates and coatings rich in cadmium. The Masua Mine itself, part of Sardinia's historic Iglesiente mining district, operated from the 19th century until its definitive closure in the 1990s; since then no fresh material has been extracted, meaning all yellow Smithsonite from this locality now in circulation comes from old stock rather than ongoing production.

While Smithsonite occurs in many colors worldwide, the intense yellow variety from Masua in Sardinia is considered among the finest and most sought-after examples of its kind, so celebrated that it once featured on the cover of a special edition of the mineralogical magazine ExtraLapis with the tagline "Think Zinc." The Masua Mine, along with the nearby harbor of Porto Flavia, was a cornerstone of Sardinia's zinc and lead mining industry for well over a century before its final closure in the 1990s, after which the yellow Smithsonite it once produced became increasingly scarce on the collector's market.
